carrier heat pumpThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Carrier has recalled Carrier and Bryant brand heat pumps because of a possible fire hazard.

The recall was issued on Oct. 10, 2019, and includes 1.5 ton multi-zone, 4-ton multi-zone, and 4-ton single zone ductless heat pumps in both the Carrier and Bryant brands.

Reportedly, the fan motors on the heat pumps can fail, which can cause the pumps to overheat. In turn, this overheating can reportedly cause the devices to set fire.

The heat pumps were recalled after Carrier received reports of six incidents in which the heat pumps caught fire. Five of the fire incidents were reported in Canada, and one was reported in the United States. Happily, no injuries have been reported in connection to the problem.

The heat pumps were sold nationwide between March 2015 and April 2019 for between $600 and $4,000. They were sold at Carrier and Bryant distributors, independent dealers, and contractors.

They were manufactured in China and were imported by Carrier Corporation of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The Miami Herald says that the recall affects around 5,800 units.

Customers who purchased a heat pump included in the recall are eligible for a repair to their heat pump. Customers can contact a Carrier or Bryant dealer in their area for more information about the recall.

Information on finding a Carrier dealer can be found on the dealer locator on CarrierDuctless.com, and information for finding a Bryant dealer can be found on ByrantDuctless.com

Customers can also get information on finding a dealer near them by contacting Carrier toll-free at 844-468-4301 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.

The CPSC recall number for the product is 20-009.

Customers are invited to a report an incident involving the Carrier and Bryant heat pumps on the CPSC website.

The CPSC notes that the recall was initiated in conjunction with Canada. The CPSC further states that recalls like the Carrier heat pump recall are done in an effort to protect the public from dangerous or defective products.

The CPSC explains that federal law prohibits the sale of a product that has been recalled voluntarily by the manufacturer or recalled mandatorily by the CPSC.

Unfortunately, the Carrier and Bryant heat pumps are not the only devices to have been recalled over a possible fire hazard recently. Earlier this week, the CPSC reported that Zippo has recalled its Ronson Tech Torches over a possible fire hazard. Reportedly, the torches can continue to release a flame even after the activation trigger is put into an off position.
