  • Why: The shrimp might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Where: The shrimp was distributed nationwide in the United States.

Check your freezer: More than 20,000 packages of cooked, frozen shrimp are being recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

The recall was issued by Southeastern Grocers and applies to 20,830 packages of Fisherman’s Wharf brand cooked shrimp, Food Safety News reports.

The company is located in Jacksonville, Florida, but the shrimp was distributed nationwide in the United States.

“There is concern that consumers may have the frozen shrimp in their homes because of the long shelf life,” the recall says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Shrimp Consumers Should Throw Away Or Return Product

Consumers should check their fridges and freezers to see if they have the recalled shrimp, and, if found, they should throw it out or return it to the shop where they purchased it.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections.

Listeria monocytogenes is a species of pathogenic disease-causing bacteria that can be found in moist environments, soil, water, decaying vegetation and animals and can survive and even grow under refrigeration and other food preservation measures.

When people eat food contaminated with L. monocytogenes, they may develop a disease called listeriosis.

There are a range of symptoms for listeriosis. Depending on the severity of the illness, symptoms may last from days to several weeks. Mild symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. For the very young, the elderly and the immune-compromised listeriosis can result in death.

The recalled product is Fisherman’s Wharf, Shrimp 16 /20 Cooked Shrimp in 16-ounce packages with the number 7306067, Lot 77185, Expiration Date 4/5/2023 and 4/6/2023.

Meanwhile, a listeria outbreak that has caused at least two deaths and 13 hospitalizations nationwide has been linked to Dole packaged leafy greens, and health authorities are warning consumers to get rid of the recalled packaged salads.
