Dole Salad Recall Overview:

  • Who: Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. is recalling four of its garden salads due to possible listeria contamination.
  • Why: The recalled salads all have a best if used by date of Oct. 25, 2021. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the salads, according to the company.
  • Where: The recall affects 10 states in the south and east of the United States.

Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. has announced a multistate recall of four cases of its garden salads due to possible listeria contamination.

The recalled salads include the 24 oz Dole Garden Salad; the 24 oz Marketside Classic Salad; the 12 oz Kroger Brand Garden Salad; and the 12 oz Salad Classics Garden Salad, all with a best if used by date of Oct. 25, 2021, the company says in the recall notice.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to any of the salads in the “precautionary recall,” which Dole says is being issued after a single sample of garden salad tested positive for listeria monocytogenes at a Department of Agriculture facility in Georgia.

For full details on the lot and UPC codes of the salads, see the recall notice here. The recalled products were sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Given the salads are past their best if used by date of Oct. 25, 2021, they should no longer be on retail shelves, but Dole is asking customers to check their homes for the salads and discard any that match the lot and UPC codes and best if used by dates.

Dole Warns of Listeria Contamination

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that often comes from soil or water and can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the recall notice explains.

Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Salads and other fresh produce are susceptible to listeria contamination and are often the subject of precautionary recalls.

In September, The Kroger Co. and Baker Farms issued a voluntary recall for bagged kale products due to possible listeria contamination. Also, in September, Erie Meat Products recalled all packages of its Frozen All White Meat Fully Cooked Diced Chicken for the same reason.

Consumers with questions about this recall may call the Dole Consumer Center, which is open 24 hours a day.

Top Class Actions will monitor the salad recall and other food safety recalls for developments.
