Scentsational Soaps & Candles is recalling its hand sanitizer over potentially harmful ingredients

Check the label on your hand sanitizers — if they’re made by Scentsational Soaps & Candles Inc., they might contain three types of harmful chemicals.

The company announced Wednesday it is voluntarily recalling eleven types of its scented hand sanitizers after testing revealed they contain three chemicals that can be harmful to humans.

The chemicals are methanol, benzene, and acetaldehyde.

The affected products were distributed nationwide through online beauty store Ulta Beauty, and at TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores.

Scentsational Soaps & Candles is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Consumers can recognize the affected product by looking at the label. The affected products are from the SS Black and White Collection and SS Photo Real Collection, and come in 3.38 fluid oz. or 3.4 fluid oz. containers in various scents. The potential risk of using products containing either methanol, benzene, or acetaldehyde are severe.

For example, substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, or death, the recall says.

Children who accidentally ingest the product, or people who drink the product as an alcohol substitute are most at risk for methanol poisoning.

Exposure to benzene can occur through inhalation, oral consumption or even through the skin.

“There is a reasonable probability that benzene present at levels above the maximum daily exposure recommendations can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening,” the recall warns.

It says the final chemical, acetaldehyde, has been found to possibly cause cancer in humans. However, to date, Scentsational Soaps & Candles has not got any reports of adverse reactions to the sanitizers.

The company is asking consumers to stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase. Distributors and retailers that have the hand sanitizers are asked to stop selling the products and return them to Scentsational Soaps & Candles. Questions can be directed to the company over the phone at +1-855-554-8050.

The recall comes as class action lawsuits are leveled at manufacturers and retailers around the country over the contents of their hand sanitizers.

A class action filed in April alleges Virgin Scent, the manufacturer of the brand ArtNaturals, took advantage of the pandemic to sell consumers hand sanitizers that contain the toxic chemical benzene.

Meanwhile Walmart is being accused of profiting at customers’ expense during the pandemic by selling hand sanitizers made with “dangerous” amounts of benzene.
