Teen most used social media platforms overview:

  • Who: Pew Research Center released a new survey involving teens’ social media and internet use and device ownership.
  • Why: The survey found YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram were the most used online platforms by teens this year.
  • Where: The survey involved teens nationwide.

YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram were the most used social media platforms by teens in the U.S. this year, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center.

The survey involved a total of 1,453 teens age 13 to 17 and covered the use of social media and internet and device ownership among teens, according to Pew

Roughly nine out of ten teens responded that they use YouTube, according to the survey, which found teens are less likely to be using Facebook or X — formerly known as Twitter — than they were a decade ago.

Of teens age 13 to 17, 63% responded that they use TikTok, 60% said they use Snapchat and 59% said they use Instagram, according to the survey, which revealed about 70% of teens age 15 to 17 used TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

The Pew survey found that the social media usage among teens has remained relatively stable since spring of last year, with the percentage of teens who use TikTok in particular statistically unchanged from that time.

Nearly 1 in 5 teens say they use YouTube, TikTok ‘almost constantly,’ survey finds

Teens were also asked how often they use the social media apps, with nearly 1 in 5 revealing they are using YouTube or TikTok “almost constantly,” according to Pew.

About 7 in 10 teens in total said they use YouTube on a daily basis, compared to 58% of teens who responded that they are daily users of TikTok, according to the survey.

Around 50% of teens said they use Snapchat and Instagram on a daily basis, meanwhile, with 14% saying they use Snapchat almost constantly and 8% saying the same for Instagram.

In terms of gender, teen girls are more likely to respond that they almost constantly are using TikTok and Snapchat, while there was little to no difference for the amount of boys versus girls who said they are constantly using YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, according to Pew.

Race and ethnicity also were factored in, with Pew revealing it found larger shares of Black and Hispanic teens reporting being on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok almost constantly compared to white teens.

In other social media news, a federal judge ruled earlier this year that individuals can proceed with complaints against social media companies  accused of illegally enticing and addicting children and teens to their platforms, in detriment to their mental health.
