Pyrex dishwasher safe class action overview:

  • Who: The owner of a Pyrex measuring cup is suing Instant Brands.
  • Why: The plaintiff says the cups’ lines wash off quickly in a dishwasher, rendering them useless.
  • Where: The Pyrex class action lawsuit was filed in an Illinois federal court.

Pyrex measuring cups are not worth the money consumers pay for them because the red measuring lines wash off easily in a dishwasher, rendering them useless, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Tammy Devane filed the class action complaint against Instant Brands LLC Sept. 10. in an Illinois federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

Instant Brands makes and markets tempered glass measuring cups under the Pyrex brand, the lawsuit says.

The ads for the product tell consumers the product is “dishwasher safe”—both on the company website and on the websites of the retailers who stock the product.

“However, the Product is not dishwasher safe because the measurement markings fade and disappear when the cups are washed in a dishwasher,” Devane alleges.

“According to hundreds of customer complaints, the markings can often disappear in as little as one wash.”

Warranty doesn’t cover Pyrex measuring cups lines

The product is sold with a “Limited Two-Year Warranty” which the fine print reveals only covers replacement in the event it breaks from oven heat, the Pyrex lawsuit states.

“For the measuring cups which are not used in ovens, the warranty is misleading and without value.”

Devane says the company refuses to honor the warranty for customers who seek coverage for products with markings that quickly fade.

“Defendant’s refusal to warrant the Product’s markings is unfair and deceptive because the measurement lines are essential to its functioning and utility.”

Devane is suing on behalf of a class of Florida and Illinois resident who bought the measuring cup, plus a consumer fraud multistate class from Alabama, Montana, Alaska, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Utah, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

She’s suing under state consumer laws and for breach of warranty, fraud, negligent misrepresentation and unjust enrichment. Devane is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Meanwhile, a class action lawsuit alleging Pyrex soda lime glass could explode during the normal cooking process was dismissed in 2020.

  1. Fred Zollinger says:

We own two Pyrex(R) two-cup measuring cups where the ink has disappeared.

  2. Deborah Bonsack says:

Have multiple Pyrex measuring cups, 3-8 cup, 1-4 cup, 2-2 cup, and 2-1.5 cup, which are the ones that are now useless with the markings becoming increasingly harder to see, especially at the 1/4 cup and 1/3 cup levels. Very disappointed that in this day and age that anything that is heat resistant isn’t likely to get put in the dishwasher! Planned obsolescence?
