Generac SnapRS class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Dustin Moon filed a class action lawsuit against Generac Power Systems Inc.
  • Why: Moon claims Generac sells dangerous and defective solar panel PWRcell Systems containing faulty SnapRS (rapid shutdown) unit components.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Generac Power Systems sells defective and dangerous solar panel PWRcell Systems containing faulty SnapRS (rapid shutdown) unit components that fail in their job to rapidly shut down power to individual solar panels, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Dustin Moore claims the SnapRS units in Generac’s PWRcell Systems are meant to protect against electric surges, but, instead, are prone to malfunctioning by becoming overactive.

Moore argues the Generac SnapRS units, after becoming overactive, can begin to “overheat, bubble, burn and explode, resulting in charring and home fires.”

“Generac’s SnapRS units are defective and dangerous to consumers and their homes,” the Generac class action argues.

Moon wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who have purchased, leased, or otherwise acquired a Generac PWRcell System containing an allegedly defective SnapRS unit.

Generac has failed to disclose alleged defect to consumers, says class action

In addition to allegedly failing to rapidly shut down power, Moore claims the alleged defect leads to a “loss of energy production” by ultimately “shutting down entire panels for prolonged periods of time or complete shutdowns of their entire energy system.”

Moore also argues Generac failed to disclose to consumers that its SnapRS units are allegedly defective, while neglecting to recall them, provide refunds or offer consumers “adequate replacement components.”

“Despite that it knew or should have known of this Defect, Generac failed to disclose this Defect to Plaintiff and other consumers,” the Generac class action states.

Moore claims Generac is guilty of breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty and is in violation of California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Legal Remedies Act

The plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of compensatory and punitive damages for himself and all class members.

In November, Generac reannounced it was recalling more than 325,000 of its portable generators after it said it received additional reports of finger injuries — including amputations — caused by an unlocked handle on the generator.

Generac solar was installed since 2020 worked for 3 months die never came back now Me my wife make payments for power light and for solar doesn’t work. Tremendous scam

  2. Beth Sarkisian says:

Pink installed the solar panels with battery last September. October they filed bankruptcy. The system wasn’t turned on until January. By April the battery started making a grinding noise. I discovered we cannot shut off the power except the refrigerator. It’s wired wrong. The entire system is a failure. It is costing beyond anything. We are retired. I am disabled. We have a fixed income and now if we attempt to get out of this it will cost us more to get out of the loan.

It’s a fire hazard with no way to shut it off. Confirmed by the electric company and the building permit office of Lunenburg County Virginia. One lightening strike could cost us our house and timber farm. It has propane. It seems they aren’t motivated to fix. Too many calls and emails.

  3. Robert Souther says:

We had Pink Energy install Generac Solar system, our loam through GoodLeap to pay for it was $64,000. The battery backup is not working and it’s taken almost a year to see a difference in our electric bills. We have contacted Generac, they wanted us to locate another company for repairs, which all the parts are in back order through Generac. We have complained to Generac about the problems multiple times.

I went Solar with Sigora Home in May 2022. They ordered and installed in August 2022 a ground-mounted solar array and a Generac PWRCell inverter and battery. After five months of the battery not working, they replaced a load management module. Then the battery failed to perform its backup function during power outages. Then the solar company techs said the battery doesn’t function (goes into “Standby” mode) when the air temperature drops below 45 degrees F. Turns out the solar company installed an “indoor” rated battery on the outside of my home, on a mountaintop where it can drop below 45F on half the days in the year. When I asked Sigora Home to at least move the battery to an indoor wall, they stopped communicating with me entirely. I also requested information from Generac (who ordered the equipment, and what order numbers). Natch, Generac has not responded to me on the message I left on their website. I will be contacting my state attorney general’s office for guidance on reporting both companies for the failure of function of the Generac lithium ion battery and for misrepresentation or fraud in selling me the wrong battery, or for failing to disclose its operating limit. If they had disclosed that before or during installation, of course I would have asked Sigora Home to install it in an indoor storage hazard.
I doubt that my battery problem falls within this class action, but it seems there should be one regarding Generac solar products in general; it appears to me that Generac is dumping shoddy merchandise through third parties in a deliberate scheme where the wholesaler and the retail vendors can wash their hands of customer complaints after the installation. In other words they agreed in advance to deny responsibility and/or blame each other for the manufacturing workmanship defects (Generac) and any installation or repair problems (solar retailer like Sigora Home, in my case). Next stop: stay AG office!

Pink energy installed power cell backup battery and solar panels, March 26th,2021. Product did not work and blamed Generac for problem. In Nov.2021 they finally got system partially working after many times of replacing parts. In March 2022 system quit working again. They sent out technicians in June of 2022. Got it working partially again. They blamed Generac for faulty equipment. On Dec. 24th,2022. it quit working again. Generac sent sublets out from Sunova. Found problems, called Generac and though different testing found wiring problem. They stated problems with product and the whole wiring system had to be replaced. This was on May 9th,2023. They got a percent of one leg out of four to work. This would allow some power going to battery backup system. They stated problems with main battery in power cell cabinet. Days later Power cell cabinet started making popping noise, and I could smell burning smell coming from cabinet. I shut down system and called Generac. They still have not sent anybody else out for problem. After couple weeks I called again they said they where waiting for replacement parts. This comment about replacement parts has gone on for two long. They have had to replace parts on this system during this whole process. I also believe this system was not an updated system and used parts where installed.

Our pink energy / generac generator has not worked in over 18 months we have had work order after work order opened and they close them saying the system is operable it does not work! we have over $75,000.00 in our system and we have never missed a payment to Goodleap the financiers of this fiasco and have absolutely nothing to show for it. The Blame always get put on someone else.
RS snaps were replaced as soon as that happened the control panel went out then 2 men show up without our knowledge and they said the control box panel is out, the same day the wo was opened generac closed it saying the system was working properly.
On 6/13/2023 we get a call stating our account is going into amortization and our payments will be going up over $100.00 for a system that does not work !
I wonder what the Attorney Generals office of Texas is going to say about all this?

  7. Ann Smith says:

I have a Genarac solar system with a back up battery and it has not worked correctly more than 2 months in a row since its been installed. I would like information on how to be included in this class action law suite

  8. George Harmon says:

I have a full Generac solar system installed by Pink Energy. The system is currently not working and I owe over 70K for it. The company replaced the snaps on the panels once but they have apparently failed again. It is very disappointing since having solar was part of a plan to reduce my expenses when I retire. I regret that decision now.

  9. Mike McCarthy says:

Well, its nice to see I am not the only one dealing with this. I signed up with Generac Solar only to find out a 3rd party does the actual install. Took a year for it to finally be turned on. Called Generac for help, they took my information down then nothing. Got we will look into it for you then crickets. Call back, email back nothing. Now I got an email from a completely different solar Company saying they are going to change the Snaps. Windmar reached out several months ago cause I had an issue and was told they were changing them all out. But apparently they didnt convey that to Generac. Called Generac and got told they dont know what was involved but it needs to be done. I said Windmar was to have done this a few months ago and was told by Generac they had no record and that they would get back to me. I will not be holding my breathe. Worst experience and I wish I never signed up for solar.

  10. Jamil Chris says:

($47k-GoodLeap) My wife and I got our system in February 2021. It worked until the Fall of 2021 and then stopped working. I’ve had to put in multiple service requests with Generac, which are routed to NovaSource Power Services. Technicians come out and only “fix” the one part that their work order states is bad and then say that they have to close the work order because “the problem on the work order is complete” but then tell me that I have to put in another work order with Generac for the next part of the job to be done. I’ve had my Snaps, power inverter, and system control panel all replaced one work order at a time over multiple months to finally be told that my power core is bad and “burned up”. That was about 2 months ago. Generac doesn’t reach out, NovaSource doesn’t reach out, even though the technicians are putting the issues on their work orders and calling Generac for troubleshooting while they’re on site to make it clear that there are issues beyond the work order.
We’re still paying on this system, like many others, and nothing works. Great savings on the electric bill….
