  • Why: The report revealed consumers plan to spend $3.6 billion on Halloween candy this year, an increase from $3.1 billion spent in 2022.ย

Halloween candy spending is expected to increase from $3.1 billion last year to $3.6 billion this this year, according to a report released by global scholarship database Scholaroo.

Scholaroo says it analyzed data from all 50 U.S. states to reveal how Halloween prices have changed since 2020.ย

The price of Halloween candy increased by differing amounts depending on the state, with Maryland experiencing the highest price change during that time and Alaska the least.ย

Maryland also experienced the largest increase in the price of Halloween candy in the last year at 13.56%, followed by Pennsylvania (13.15%), New Jersey (12.3%), Maine (12.29%), Vermont (11.93%) and New Hampshire (11.9%).ย

Scholaroo gathered the information used in the Halloween Candy Price Index 2023 from official public data on the candy gum price index from all 50 states, the company says.ย

โ€œGum candy serves as the representative for all types of candies, as the price index available in the last 3 years specifically pertains to this product,โ€ the Scholaroo says in the index.ย

Consumers expected to spend $12.2 billion this Halloween, report says

Scholaroo anticipates consumers will also spend $4.1 billion on costumes, $3.9 billion on decorations and $500 million on greeting cards for a grand total of $12.2 billion in planned total spending.

In addition, 28% of individuals ages 19 and older are expected to do their Halloween shopping in grocery stores or supermarkets, according to the Scholaroo.ย

The report also determined 73% of consumers plan to celebrate Halloween โ€” with the top way being to hand out Halloween candy at 68% โ€” and calculated that planned spending per person will reach a total of about $108.ย

Other ways consumers are planning to celebrate Halloween include carving a pumpkin (46%), throwing or attending a party (32%), decorating (53%) and dressing up (50%), according to the report.ย

A separate report released before last Halloween found the price of Halloween candies such as Twix, Kit Kat, Snickers, Sour Patch Kids, Skittles and Butterfinger, among others, increased on account of rising inflation and supply chain disruptions.ย
