U.S. food safety watchdogs issued a public health alert for some Perdue ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders as they may contain pieces of plastic and blue dye.
On Aug. 23, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for Perdue’s frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders “gluten free” produced on July 12, 2022.
The FSIS says the product may be contaminated with small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye.
The agency did not issue a recall because the product is no longer available for purchase, the FSIS says. However, it is concerned that some of the affected Perdue chicken tenders may be in consumers’ freezers.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the FSIS says in the health alert.
Perdue chicken tenders shipped nationwide to BJ’s Wholesale Club retail locations
The affected product came in 42 oz. plastic bags with the label “PERDUE CHICKEN BREAST TENDERS GLUTEN FREE,” as well as a “Best if Used By” date of July 12, 2023, and lot number of 2193.
The products were shipped nationwide to BJ’s Wholesale Club retail locations.
Perdue discovered the problem when BJ’s Wholesale Club reported it received a complaint from a consumer reporting a chicken tender that had a small piece of clear plastic and blue dye inside it, the health alert says.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products so far, the FSIS says in the Perdue chicken tenders health alert. The company is not currently facing legal action over the health alert, but Top Class Actions follows alerts closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
In related Perdue news, in February, a judge gave final approval to $35 million worth of settlements between chicken farmers and companies Perdue and Tyson after the pair were accused of colluding with other co-conspirators to hike the price of chicken.
Months later, a Perdue broiler chicken grower filed a class action lawsuit against Perdue Farms Inc. and Perdue Foods LLC for allegedly purposely exercising a high level of control over growers while still classifying them as independent contractors to avoid administering employee wages and benefits.
