Neutrogena/Aveeno Sunscreen Refunds Overview:

  • Who: Johnson & Johnson is issuing consumers refunds for its Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense, Neutorgena Ultra Sheer and Aveeno Protect + Refresh sunscreen products.
  • Why: Those products were all recalled in July because of elevated levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.
  • Where: Consumers across the United States are eligible for the refunds..

In July, Johnson & Johnson recalled five Neutrogena and Aveeno brand spray sunscreens, saying the products contain benzene — a chemical that causes cancers like leukemia.

Now, the company is issuing consumers refunds for five of its products: Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, and Aveeno Protect + Refresh.

To get a refund, consumers need to complete a form on J&J’s Consumer Care Center’s website, and provide the product name, size, and quantity of items purchased; for four or more units consumers will have to provide proof of purchase (picture/scan of receipt or single picture of all items). A representative may email or call to verify information or request additional information such as proof of purchase. If you have additional questions, you can call 1-800-458-1673.

All five of the sunscreens the company is issuing refunds for were found to contain “low levels” of benzene in some samples before they were recalled, according to J&J.

Benzene is a chemical used mainly as a starting material for plastics, lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides, according to the American Cancer Society. It’s a natural part of crude oil and gasoline, motor vehicle exhaust and cigarette smoke. The link between benzene and cancer has largely focused on leukemia and other cancers of blood cells.

Despite J&J trying to reassure consumers that “daily exposure to benzene in these aerosol sunscreen products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,” the company is facing a slate of class action lawsuits over the discovery.

The claims were filed after independent online pharmacy Valisure undertook testing on the sunscreens and found benzene present in quantities above the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s concentration limit of two parts per million, with some products containing nearly seven parts per million.

Alarmed by the results, Valisure filed a citizen petition with the FDA to recall the products on May 24, 2021. The Neutorgena and Aveeno recalls were then announced by J&J on July 14, 2021.
