Emily Hergert and Julie McClanahan claim sparks from their Conair hair dryers burned each of them. The hair dryers can even catch fire, alleges the complaint.

Hergert alleges she purchased one of the affected Conair hair dryers in 2018. The same year, the hair dryer allegedly caught fire while she was using it, subsequently burning her wrist and forearm.

McClanahan also purchased a Conair Infiniti Pro Hair Styler Series 259Y, according to the complaint. This plaintiff likewise claims that she experienced burns to her wrist and forearm after the device sparked and ignited while she was using it.

“In each incident, the Dryers malfunctioned even though they were equipped with ‘safety plugs’ designed to recognize a change in the electrical current,” contends the complaint. “In each case, the ‘safety plugs’ did not prevent the Dryer from sparking and causing injury.”

According to the class action lawsuit, the safety device meant to stop sparks does not function properly and Conair was aware of the problem.

“Defendant was well aware of these defects and that the defects posed a serious safety hazard, but concealed that information from Plaintiffs and consumers to make a profit to maintain an edge over its competitors, and to place consumers under the false belief that its products were safe.”

Hergert and McClanahan claim that Conair knew about the problem yet allowed the defective hair dryers be distributed and sold, in violation of their duty to provide safe products to consumers.

“At all material times hereto Defendant, Conair, had a duty to design, manufacture, sell, and distribute its Dryer so that it was neither defective, no unreasonably dangerous when put to the use for which it was designed, manufactured, distributed and sold,” alleges the class action lawsuit.

Hergert and McClanahan say they would not have purchased or paid as much for their Conair Infiniti Pro Hair Stylers Series 259Y had they known the product could spark and catch fire or were otherwise defective. They say that other consumers would not have purchased the hair dryers either.

The Conair hair dryer class action lawsuit seeks to represent Illinois residents who purchased the Infiniti Pro Hair Styler Series 259Y, including those who were injured because of the hair dryer between Feb. 24, 2019 and the present.

The plaintiffs accuse Conair of negligence, breach of warranty, consumer fraud and deceptive business practices. The class action lawsuit is seeking damages, along with costs and other relief.

This is not the first class action Conair has faced over its hair dryers. In 2016, Conair agreed to pay $5.4 million to settle claims that its model 259 or 279 Infiniti Pro hair dryers also sparked and caught fire.

I tried to contact local attorneys and I was told to follow up with you so hopefully I can get some kind of answer on how I should proceed I have taken pictures daily and just handling the burns without having to go to the hospital because of covid.

I was just using my blow dryer which was bought within the last year & it sparked and blew the whole circuit. Once I seen the spark I unplugged it immediately, while trying to unplug it the cord melted off the blow dryer and burned my boyfriends hand. I have pictures, it literally disconnected itself from the cord. No automatic turn off, nothing just a fire waiting to happen
