(May 19, 2021)

A New York consumer says that Mane ‘n Tail shampoo and conditioners contain ingredients that can form the known carcinogen formaldehyde, but the manufacturer kept this information secret from the public.

Lead plaintiff Brenda Ryan, filed a nationwide class action lawsuit in New York federal court Wednesday against the maker of Mane ‘n Tail hair care items, Straight Arrow Products, Inc. Ryan claims that Straight Arrow is dodging the truth when it comes to the ingredients in its hair care line and has done so for more than a decade.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Mane ‘n Tail shampoos and conditioners “contain an ingredient or combination of ingredients that causes significant hair loss and/or scalp irritation upon proper application. At least one ingredient in the Products, DMDM hydantoin, is a formaldehyde donor known to slowly leach formaldehyde when coming into contact with water.”

Indeed, Ryan claims that she relied on Straight Arrow’s marketing of Mane ‘n Tail that declared the hair products would “would restore, revitalize, recondition, refreshen, nourish, fortify, moisturize, strengthen, and/or clean her hair from root to tip” when she purchased an item from the line.

Ryan says that shortly after she started using the product, she suffered severe scalp irritation and several “massive bald spots on her head.” She claims she continued to use Mane ‘n Tail for two months and the problems only started to gradually diminish when she stopped.

The class action lawsuit contends that the company represents that its products, originally derived from shampoo and conditioner that could be used on humans as well as horses, are made with high quality and safe ingredients both online and on Mane ‘n Tail packaging. Though the dangers of some of the ingredients in the hair products have been well documented for nearly 10 years, Straight Arrow continues to use them and market them as safe to consumers, alleges the lawsuit.

“Despite having public knowledge since at least 2012 that DMDM hydantoin, as a formaldehyde donor, can cause or contribute to hair loss and scalp irritation, Straight Arrow has inexplicably continued to include this ingredient as a preservative in some of its Mane ‘n Tail products while simultaneously not using DMDM hydantoin as a preservative in many of its other Mane ‘n Tail products,” states the class action lawsuit.

Ryan claims that Straight Arrow misleads consumers about the safety of the following Mane ‘n Tail products:

  • Gentle Clarifying Shampoo
  • Gentle Clarifying Conditions
  • Anti-Dandruff Conditioner
  • Herbal Gro Conditioner

The class action lawsuit seeks to represent consumers across the nation who purchased Mane ‘n Tail products containing the allegedly harmful ingredients. Ryan is seeking damages on their behalf, as well as an injunction stopping the alleged false advertising by Straight Arrow.
