Procter & Gamble Dry Shampoo Recall Overview:

  • Who: The Procter & Gamble Company is recalling cans of dry shampoo and conditioner from brands Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Waterl<ss.
  • Why: The company has found benzene, a known human carcinogen, in some of the products.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is recalling 32 different products of dry shampoo and conditioner from brands Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, Waterl<ss, Hair Food and Old Spice due to the presence of the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

According to a recall notice posted Dec. 17 on the P&G website, the recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States through retail outlets and online. See the full list of recalled products here

P&G first began a review of its portfolio of aerosol products following recent reports that indicated there were traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen because it can cause cancer in humans.

Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin, and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening, P&G said.

Benzene Found In Propellant That Sprays Product

While benzene is not an ingredient in any of its products, its review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the aerosol cans.

“We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the consumers who use our products and the quality of the products we ship,” it said.

P&G said retailers have been alerted to remove the recalled products from shelves.

“Our brands will also offer reimbursement for consumers who have purchased products impacted by this recall,” the company said. “Consumers should stop using and appropriately discard the affected aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol dry shampoo spray products.”

Meanwhile, any adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of the products may be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program

Several spray deodorants and antiperspirants contain the toxin benzene, according to the independent lab Valisure. Valisure also discovered the presence of benzene in several popular sunscreen products.

Valisure has filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration asking the federal agency to recall the affected products.
