Bone health is an incredibly important part of childhood development. Children whose bones break easily may be suffering from nutritional deficiencies or medical conditions. Although many bone conditions such as osteoporosis generally affect adults later in their life, these conditions may be linked to bone development in childhood.

Bones are made up of living tissue that constantly changes and develops. However, this bone tissue development occurs at a much higher rate for children than for adults.

Some disorders that may affect bone strength and health in children may include juvenile arthritis, malabsorption syndromes, hyperthyroidism, and osteogenesis imperfecta. Other factors that may lead to bone loss may include a lack of nutrition or calcium deficiency.

These deficiencies may be related to dietary choices. Poor bone health may disproportionately affect infants and children who require meal replacement formulas such as Neocate, as these formulas have been linked to hypophosphatemia and other nutritional deficits.

What is Neocate?

Neocate is a meal replacement formula manufactured by Nutricia North America that is meant for infants and children with allergies and special dietary needs. The hypoallergenic nutrition formula is amino-acid based, making it easy for children with food allergies to digest. However, although this meal replacement formula may be necessary for children unable to digest traditional formulas, Neocate has been linked to several serious side effects regarding bone health.

What are Neocate Side Effects?

According to a Yale study from 2017, 51 children who had taken Neocate and switched to a different nutrition source were found to have higher levels of calcium and phosphate following the switch. The study showed that children taking Neocate were more likely to develop issues like vitamin D deficiencies, rickets, broken bones, and spontaneous fractures. Almost all of the children in the study were found to have improved bone health and skeletal development after being taken off of the Neocate formula.

Children whose bones break easily after taking Neocate may be suffering from hypophosphatemia, or an abnormally low level of phosphorus in the blood. Hypophosphatemia may cause side effects including muscle weakness, fatigue, bone pain or fractures, slowed growth, shorter than normal height, and tooth decay. Additional side effects of taking Neocate may include rickets, skeletal deformities, and long term skeletal damage.

Who is at Risk?

Thousands of infants and children with dietary restrictions or food allergies rely on Neocate to supply a major part of their nutritional needs. In addition to the nutritional deficits that may be suffered by children who are fed via a Neocate diet, parents of these children may also be at risk. In at least one case, a child’s Neocate-related broken bones were mistaken for signs of familial child abuse.

Nutricia produces several different Neocate formulas:

  • Infant DHA/ARA
  • Junior
  • Junior With Probiotics
  • Nutra
  • Splash
  • Syneo Infant

Victims of Neocate complications including hypophosphatemia, skeletal abnormalities, and broken bones may be able to collect compensation for medical expenses, injuries, pain and suffering, and other costs associated with the formula’s side effects.

Filing a Neocate Baby Formula Lawsuit

More and more concerned parents and guardians are coming forward with their claims that Neocate baby formula does not adequately replace traditional infant formula, and because of this discrepancy, it can lead to a number of serious side effects in the infants and children that take it. In some cases, they claim these complications may even cause permanent damage.

If your child has taken Neocate baby formula and has since suffered from complications like broken bones, rickets, or other side effects associated with Neocate, you may be able to file a lawsuit and receive compensation.

Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by these kinds of side effects, but it can at least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses, lost wages, and more. Filing a lawsuit can be a daunting prospect, especially while dealing with your child’s health concerns, so Top Class Actions has laid the groundwork for you by connecting you with an experienced attorney. Consulting an attorney can help you determine if you have a claim, navigate the complexities of litigation, and maximize your potential compensation.
