Volvo recalled more than 126,000 trucks equipped with defective electronic control units, as the faulty units increase the risk of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the recall Oct. 23. It applies to 126,649 model year 2020-25 VN, VAH, VHD and VNRE trucks equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units.
A number of safety systems depend on the electronic control units, including automatic traction control, antilock brake systems, electronic stability control, active cruise control and collision mitigation systems. These safety systems may have diminished or lost functionality due to the defect, increasing the risk of a crash, the recall says.
“Electrical noise and low signal to the power line carrier may cause the ECU to incorrectly process commands or stop working,” the recall states.
No accidents, injuries related to the defect, recall says
There have been no accidents or injuries reported in relation to the issue.
Volvo dealers will reprogram the ECU software free of charge, according to the recall notice. The company expects to mail owner notification letters Dec. 13.
In January, Volvo recalled more than 17,000 of its model year 2024 Volvo XC40 vehicles over concerns the hybrid electric vehicles contain a potentially defective left rear turn signal.
