Honda SUV, Pickup Truck Recall Overview:Â
- Who: Honda has issued a recall on certain late-model vehicles, including 2019 Passports, 2016-2019 Pilots and 2017-2020 Ridgelines.Â
- Why: Â In documents submitted to federal regulators, the automaker warns that the hoods on these vehicles may open while in motion.
- Where: The recall affects more than 780,000 vehicles worldwide, 725,000 of which are in the U.S.
Honda drivers have been warned that late-model Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline vehicles suffer from a defect that can cause their hoods to fly open while driving, according to recall documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).Â
The vehicle safety defect is caused by an improper hood-to-grill gap, according to the NHTSA. The problem results in higher pressure on the hood latch while driving, increasing the risk of the part breaking or dislodging. The result is the hood of the recalled Honda vehicles popping open unexpectedly on motorists—a serious safety concern.Â
Honda Recalls More Than 700K SUVs, Pickup Trucks For Hood Defect
The vehicles affected by the hood latch defect recall include:Â
- 18,704 2019 Honda Passports
- More than 550,000 2016 through 2019 Honda Pilots
- Nearly 150,000 2017 through 2020 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks
Owners will be asked to bring their recalled Honda vehicles into a dealership for a free inspection or repair. The automaker says it will reimburse those who have already paid for a hood latch repair.Â
There have been no reported injuries or accidents caused by the hood latch defect but that it has received more than 100 related warranty claims, Honda says in documents sent to the NHTSA.Â
Consumers can check to see if their Honda or other vehicle has been recalled by entering their Vehicle Identification Number into an online tool provided by the NHTSA.Â
Earlier this year, Honda recalled more than 628,000 vehicles for a faulty fuel pump. The automaker is also facing a class action lawsuit alleging it sold more than 2 million cars with a parasitic draining defect that causes vehicles to stop while being driven, stall or not turn on at all.Â
