Kia is recalling certain 2024 model year EV9 GT-Line and Land vehicles due to a software issue that can result in insufficient brake pressure.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Sept. 17.
It applies to 12,000 model year 2024 Kia EV9 GT-Line and Land vehicles equipped with Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) manufactured from Sept. 25, 2023, through May 28, 2024.
According to the recall, RSPA allows a driver to remotely move the vehicle forward or reverse by pressing and holding a button on the key fob.
However, due to an error with the Integrated Electronic Brake software, repeated RSPA stops at or less than approximately 2 mph may result in the application of insufficient brake pressure, the recall notice says.
“Insufficient brake pressure can result in extended stopping distances while using RSPA,” the notice says. “Extended stopping distances can increase the risk of injury to a pedestrian.”
Free software update
Kia will notify owners of the issue by mail no later than Oct. 18. The automaker will ask them to bring their Kia EV9 to a Kia dealer, which will update the Integrated Electronic Brake software.
Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses, the automaker said.
In April, a recall was issued for more than 427,000 2020-2024 Kia Telluride SUVs due to mechanical issues that can cause the vehicles to move despite being in park.
