ford f-350 truckA recent Ford class action lawsuit claims that the company knowingly sold F-250 and F-350 trucks with a dangerous “death wobble” defect.

Plaintiff William Lessin claims that Ford has known about the defect in their trucks’ suspension and steering systems for 14 years but failed to recall the vehicles or warn their customers about the potentially dangerous problem.

The problem, referred to as a “death wobble,” allegedly stems from a defect in the trucks’ steering linkage and suspension systems.

According to the Ford class action, the defect leads to difficult steering and intense shaking even when drivers are driving in normal conditions.

“The Death Wobble is typically triggered when the class vehicles are traveling at speeds above 50 miles per hour and one of the tires hits a groove or bump in the road,” Lessin argues in his Ford truck class action. “This causes a violent shaking of the vehicle, which can only be controlled by a sudden reduction of speed.”

The Ford defect may present itself in abnormal wearing of several vehicle components, according to Lessin’s Ford class action. He claims that unusual wear or loosening of the track bar bushing, damper bracket, ball joint, control arms, shock absorbers, and/or struts can lead to the defect.

“The violent shaking of the vehicle can cause loss of control of the vehicle and difficulty steering while the class vehicles are in operation at any time and under typical driving conditions or speed,” the Ford class action lawsuit claims.

“This exposes the driver and the occupants of the class vehicles, as well as others who share the road with them, to an increased risk of accident, injury or death.”

Lessin reportedly purchased a 2011 Ford F-250 in 2010, believing that his truck was free of defects. However, Lessin allegedly experienced the “death wobble” and took his truck in for repairs multiple times over the span of three months.

Despite being diligent with his repairs, the Ford dealership allegedly refused to acknowledge the problem and honor the truck’s warranty for repairs. Due to his issues with the dealership, Lessin says he needed to spend more than $1,600 on repairs to fix the issue and he claims that his truck’s value has decreased.

Lessin’s experience reportedly represents that of numerous Ford truck owners. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) allegedly received 1,265 reports of the “death wobble” defect between March 2005 and February 2019. Some of these reports describe accidents and injuries due to the dangerous defect, the plaintiff states.

The Ford class action lawsuit claims that the automaker should have warned consumers about the defect as soon as they started to receive reports of the issue. Lessin also says that the company should pay for repairs on all affected vehicles.

Lessin seeks to represent a Class of current and former owners and lessees of model year 2005 to 2019 Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks.

Lessin and the proposed Class are represented by Richard D. McCune, David C. Wright and Mark I. Richards of McCune Wright Arevalo LLP; and Douglas C. Sohn of Sohn & Associates.

The Ford Truck Wobble Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Lessin v. Ford Motor Company, et al., Case No. 3:19-cv01082, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

I have a 2020 Ford F-250 crew cab Diesel and have had the death wobble 8 times. We sent the truck in for repair and they sent us home saying they had to order parts. Two months later, we still have this problem and it happened 2 more times. A total of 10 times and twice was pulling a 37’ 5th wheel trailer. Trying to slow down below 40 mph on a busy highway is not easy. My wife will not drive it and I honestly am concerned as well as you never know when it will happen. We should not have to park our vehicles while ford continues to make new trucks with the parts I need. I tried to get an ides from the service man and he said he has no idea when the part will become available. He had a handful of customers ahead of me and all the other service folks had that or more. This is just one dealer. I can’t imagine how many vehicles are effected across the nation.

Had to replace EVERYTHING in the front end of my 2011 Ford F350 dually diesel. I shook so bad you had to release the steering wheel and jam on the brakes. Took it to a Alignment shop and they marked EVERY part that needed replacement. They were quite aware of the Death Wobble. They advised that every Ford truck that came in was having the same problem. Yes I would like to join this suit. I cost me over $6500 to replace every piece in the steering assembly.

2013 F250 Super Duty diesel and we’ve had it happen. So dangerous! We were going 55 mph on a 2 lane, I guess a bump set it off. It scared the crap out of me. I thought I had a tire coming off! I got pulled off on a side road that was coming up. We walked around the truck, checking the tires and my son even got under the truck to see if anything had broken loose. Nothing. I was scared to get back in and drive it but it drove fine.

This is not just “2005” this goes back to 2000. Add those who still own 2000 and UP.

How can I get in on this lawsuit?? bought a 2019 F250 and when I hit 8000 miles it almost killed us on the highway while pulling a 37ft. trailor! Happened June 30th 2021. When I bought the truck I asked the dealer to check it for the death wobble, they kept the truck 2 days “checking” it and said it was fine and no such thing would happen, guess what????? IT JUST DID!

Ford Flex 2011 death wobble? Major shimmy action at hwy speed. Right side only, enough to shake the hood nearly off the vehicle, then nothing. It acts innocent. Multiple mechanics find nothing.

  8. Melissa Hernandez says:

I have a 2005 f150 that has this issue and I’ve had it looked at by numerous mechanics and all have a new problem to be addressed that I put out money to fix and none fully help w out triggering more issues but recently my husband was driving thru downtown Dallas during a bigger rush hour of traffic and not only was it at a constant shake , the trucks engine shut off while on the roadway , it never lost electrical power and after getting safely to the shoulder and checking it out the engine wld not and still hasn’t started bk up …. I’m curious wht has to happen to fix the problem w the Ford trucks .. I’m thankful he wasn’t hurt although we’ve been shelling out more cash on this
p o s .. I just read about the FORD F150 FUEL PUMP INERTIA SWITCH problems and am heading to where I had it towed to see if this is one of the problems (outside of tht “death wobble”) to HV this checked to the random place I had the truck towed which is 3hrs away from whr Ilive bc that’s how far from home we were this time it decided to pull bs.. thanx ford
Where can we sign up for this class action lawsuit bc we feel 100% owed a vehicle tht is a reliable at the least

2015 f350 6.7 I bought this truck to run my kids to wrestling and dance in the winter months and was under the impression that they were a very reliable vehicle in fact”best of its class”. At 60k developed intermittent death wobble and 10 mpg now 95000 miles it’s hard to drive straight even at 20mph. This is the only truck that I have babied in my life and the worst driving vehicle I’ve driven in my life. So now I went back to my 98 k1500 Silverado for reliability and safety of my 2 kids. Dealer is not willing to help at all. I guess it’s built to sit in the driveway n look good cause it sure ain’t no hd truck idk what to do, can’t afford to pay 2k and still have the problem. Word of advice DONT BUY Ford better off in a Isuzu. There more American made than Ford in my book.

  10. phillip chandler says:

my 2012 F-250 has death wobble as well and i have now replaced ALL the steering components, HUBS, tires, shocks, and the track arm bushing and ball joint, steering stabilizer. i have called several dealers and they ALL claim that they have NEVER heard of this issue but will replace everything that i have replaced for around $6,000 to $10,000

how can i get in on this class action, before the truck i love kills me or my family?
