American Honda Motor Co. has agreed to a settlement to benefit the owners and lessees of certain vehicles who experienced problems with their Acura infotainment system.

The Class is made up of all current owners and lessees of a 2019-2020 Acura RDX who reside in, and who purchased or leased their vehicles (other than for purposes of resale or distribution) in the United States, Puerto Rico, and all U.S. territories, as well as former owners and lessees of Class Vehicles who submit a Claim. The Class also includes any U.S. military personnel who purchased a Class Vehicle during military duty.

Plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit against American Honda Motor Co., maker of Acura vehicles, allegedly experienced problems with their Acura infotainment systems, including frequent freezes, crashes, failure to boot or shut down, and failure to connect to peripheral devices such as mp3 players and phones.

The plaintiffs claim these Acura infotainment issues were caused by software and hardware defects, and that Honda should have disclosed the defects before selling the vehicles or, alternatively, remedied them under warranty.

The Court has not ruled in favor of either party in this case. Instead, both sides have agreed to the settlement to avoid the cost and risk of trial.

The Honda Group sold about 4.5 million vehicles during its 2021 fiscal year, Statista reported. About 150,000 to 200,000 Acura vehicles are sold annually in the United States, according to GoodCarBadCar.

Class Members may file a claim seeking reimbursement for battery-recharging costs incurred as a result of a car battery that drained due to the Acura infotainment system not turning off when it should have.

Class Members also are eligible to file a claim for reimbursement for qualifying transportation costs incurred if they returned the vehicle two or more times to an authorized dealership for a repair of certain infotainment system symptoms.

Claims for reimbursement must be accompanied by documentation of the condition or occurrences and expenses incurred.

In addition to the monetary relief, Honda has agreed to extend the New Vehicle Limited Warranty as of the settlement’s effective date. The extension will add two years or 24,000 miles to the warranty to cover certain Acura infotainment system symptoms if the vehicle is within six years or 74,000 miles of its original purchase or lease.

Each Class Member who does not exclude themselves also will be eligible to receive two years of free AcuraLink Security Service. Claim forms are required for this benefit only if the Class Member made more than one service visit to an authorized Acura dealership on or before the Class notice date for Acura infotainment issues not resolved during the initial warranty service visit, excluding customer visits resulting from a recall or product update. Documentation must be provided along with the claim form.

Honda also will implement a Dealership Assessment and Assistance Program (DAAP) to direct independent, authorized Acura dealerships and their technicians to undergo additional training and implement additional service strategies, such as confirming certain software updates are installed and others.

And finally, under the terms of the Acura settlement, Honda will create, maintain, and update, for at least two years, an Infotainment System Online Resource for Class Members that will include a list of potential Acura infotainment issues and potential solutions, provide a way for Class Members to review information related to their Acura’s infotainment system, and post recall notices, among other things.

The final approval hearing in the Acura infotainment system settlement will be held Dec. 6, 2021.

The deadline to object to or opt out of the Acura settlement is Nov. 15, 2021.

The deadline to file a claim is Feb. 4, 2022.

  1. Andrew says:

I am having the same infotainment system crashes on a 2023 Acura tlx type s. Acura customer care said the TSB’S are for previous years and they don’t have any for the 2023’s so they said they can’t do anything about it. The dealership said the same thing and said our videos of the issue are not good enough to file a warranty claim .

  2. Tony Jones says:

My wife and I purchase our 2020 Acura RDX Advanced Package AWD July 2020. We was told the problems with the infotainment in the 2019 had been resolved for the 2020 models. That was a lie because we have been experiencing ongoing issues since 2021. The infotainment system is not reliable and continue to go black for days. We have taken it into the the dealership where we purchase the car Acura of Columbus. After a week with the RDX it will be working and then a few days later we are back at the dealer. Most recent it has been out for a week before it came back on for a few hours and back out again. The dealer ordered a harness to see if that will fix the problem.

  6. Christopher Waldron says:

I have a 2019 Acura TLX and the system has these same issues. CarPlay shuts down after a call and will not reconnect, even after stopping and restarting the vehicle.
Really sucks when you are driving 1000 miles and your podcast bites the dust.

  7. Lawrence Lessin says:

I have a 2018 MDX with recurrent infotainment problems and multiple visits to dealers for repairs which didn’t work. At one point they said the software was “upgraded “ to 2019 version.

  8. Karyn says:

Thank you. My vehicle is a 2021, so I believe that excludes me from the class?
