Business man fans himself due to broken AC

Consumers have been quite vocal about problems they’ve had with Trane HVAC systems. Despite the company’s catchphrase, “It’s Hard to Stop a Trane,” many customers say it’s even more difficult to keep one working. Defective parts or poor workmanship can contribute to a high failure rate of most any appliance.

Trane HVAC Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has lodged more than 200 complaints regarding Trane brand units.

One consumer writes that just seven months after installation, the Train A/C unit needed a new coil. Trane allegedly told the consumer that they had no proper replacement coils in stock and did not know when they would be restocked. Trane also purportedly told the consumer they would have to pay more than $600 to fix the unit, but the consumer doesn’t feel they should pay anything due to how new the unit is.

Another consumer wrote that they experienced failed evaporator coils six times in 10 years of owning two different Trane A/C units. Despite trying copper, aluminum and Trane-coated coils, the longest the coils tend to last is about 2.5 years. The consumer said Trane most recently recommended the consumer pay the full expense of taking the coils to a third party company and having a coating added to the new coils. The consumer wrote, “This is crazy! Why can’t you just make them last longer and not have to send them somewhere else to get coated?”

More reviews at the Consumer Affairs website point to cheap parts and unsatisfactory customer assistance.

One consumer wrote, “Expensive junk – deceptive customer service,” regarding a Trane split system she and her husband had installed as part of a renovation project at their home. She said the unit always “functioned erratically” and the contractor said that’s either how the unit works for that the couple wasn’t using the system correctly. In December 2018, the condenser quit after condensation completely iced over the unit.

She thought they had a three-year warranty, but found out that the product had never been registered for the warranty, and the one-year basic warranty had expired. Upon contacting Trane, the most that allegedly was offered to the couple was 15% off a new unit, which she and her husband agreed was not satisfactory.

Trane Heater and Air Conditioner Issues

One Las Vegas HVAC company actually addresses on its website why it will not promote Trane products.

Fast Affordable Air has found fault with Trane compressors that fail too quickly, a relatively new issue the Vegas HVAC servicer blames on outsourcing that has most likely resulted in poorly manufactured compressors.

The Trane heater still uses a clamshell design that consists of a variety of different metal densities, which can lead to cracking when the metallic areas heat and cool at different rates. The clamshell configuration also leads to a noisier unit, especially compared to different models that use a tubular designed heat exchanger, says Fast Affordable Air.

Trane’s alleged decisions to reduce their own warranties and to require servicers to pay for replacement parts up front have resulted in many local service companies to either greatly limit their own labor warranty on Trane units or to simply stop selling or servicing Trane heater and air conditioner units altogether.

Kevin L., an HVAC servicer, responded to the website article, saying in part, “I’ve been in the business for 44 years and have worked for Trane among others. I too can no longer recommend Trane.”

Have Any Trane Lawsuits Been Filed?

Man works on AC unitEarlier this year, Trane agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement after a number of Trane and American Standard air conditioning units failed. The affected machines were coated with an unauthorized rust inhibitor, which plaintiffs alleged caused the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) to become gummy and stick.

To remedy the issue, Trane allegedly had service personnel add an acidic solution to the TXV instead of replacing the valve, a stop-gap measure that plaintiffs alleged could have shortened the life of the compressor.

Trane admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to the settlement, which included reimbursement of previous repair expenses and an extended warranty for qualifying compressors. As part of the settlement, current and former owners also received the cost of labor for an authorized additive to be injected into the units that still may experience the sticky TXV.

What Can I Do If I Have Purchased a Trane?

If you live in California and have purchased a Trane HVAC system in the past several months, you could benefit from speaking with an experienced attorney. Trane currently is a company under investigation for possible consumer rights violations committed in the state of California.

Another Florida Trane consumer with a defective coil and a costly repair – $1200.00 Unit is a year and a half old – it took three visits from repair to diagnose – please add my name and email to the Class Action Suit. Would like to hear from others with same issues – hopefully, suit is active

Today is August 29, 2022. I purchased a new Trane XR16 on August 3, 2021 for $7,694.00 and it was installed on August 6, 2021. Last week on August 23, 2022, it stopped working. It took my dealer, Del Air, 4 days to arrive at my house for inspection. The coils are leaking. After doing some research I have found that faulty coils are common with the Trane Units. The warranty will cover the part, but the labor is $1,441.00. I live in Florida and it will be a week tomorrow with no AC. I have had to call Trane’s Consumer Department to file a claim to cover the labor costs to install new coils. I am a military widow and am very angry that the salesmen from Del Air would sell me a Trane AC unit when it is all over the internet, the problems with the Trane coils leaking. Now they are telling me that it will be 50 days before they can replace the coils, regardless of who will pay the labor cost. I just fought for 14 years to get a Bill passed at the White House for Veterans to receive health benefits after being exposed to toxic chemicals, which killed my husband, and I will do whatever it takes to make Trane responsible for making faulty equipment and allowing us to buy it! If there is a civil law suit, I would like to be a part of it because I believe the only way to resolve this, is for me to buy another brand of AC unit and fight to get my purchase total back from Trane.

Please add us to your class action lawsuit. 6 coil replacements in 10 years.

All, I too had a brand new TRANE installed. Trane TAM9 system / 3 Ton unit. Evap coil leaked 1 yr after install. Tech said part was covered under warranty but labor is not, $1000 for 2 hrs install. He also mentioned when you run in “Heat Pump” mode it puts too much pressure on Evap coil and causes the leak. Since the repair I will not run in Heat Pump mode but Emergency Mode or run space heaters in the house. I agree this is BS but hoping this knowledge help you system last longer until you replace it. I have learned to make it more efficient the manufactures thin out the coils. Also the Freon will crack the plastic on the air handler. They said “Hard to stop a Trane…” I would call it JUNK! I am sure they all have their problems. When this thing goes again it is getting replaced with another brand. I wonder if anyone knows if I can just replace the Air Handler with another Mfg or another non-Trane coil? I also don’t like the transition from coper to aluminum that the freon makes going to the evaporator coil.

Unit installed Dec 2020, not cooling and we just learned coil is no good…so just over 1.5yrs old. Parts under warranty but I have to pay $800+ for labor. AC company emailed me this morning that parts have to come directly from Trane – none in stock locally. Trane has no ETA on when they will have a coil. I live in SW Florida. It was 108 today. I called a Trane asking what am I supposed to do with a basically new unit that doesn’t work, it’s 100 degrees middle of summer and they have no idea when they can supply a replacement part?? My issue has been escalated according to rep….meanwhile my choice is to wait and see what Trane does or purchase new unit from someone else.

    1. Bob says:

I had 2 Trane evaporator coils fail in the same week in June!! My coils were 4 years old. The aluminum coils obviously are not holding up like Trane intended. They offered me $300 in hush money in exchange for signing away any right to future settlements or complaints against them. That must be how they are keeping this under wraps.

  5. Susan Hall says:

If you are talking outside heat pump condenser, I just found out that my Trane XV850 has wiring that is easy access for mice to chew, and not covered under warranty. I had it installed almost 5 years ago and has been regularly serviced every year. I was just told my $1,000 part is on backorder. Never buy a TRANE anything.

  6. Lionel Hogan says:

I live in Florida and we are on our second system in 3 years Now there is another problem with evaperation coil. 4 days in summer now with no ac 1600 they want now after 10,000 +

  7. jeanette m batavich says:

    1. Monika Bonn-Miller says:

I do completely agree with you. I hope there is another class action lawsuit about the defective evaporator coil!!!!!

    2. Penney Parkes says:

I had a evap coil fail after 13 months.. I MAYBE used the unit 5 times..now the labor and refrigerant are not covered $1100!! IS there a class action suit being filed?? If so can someone give me that info. I am waiting for Trane to get back to me.

  8. Dana King says:

I bought my 4ton Trane unit in April 2020. By Oct 2020 it wasn’t working on cool. I was told that “the compressor back built pressure, blew out the terminal block and blew out all the freon”
I had a new unit placed then. Thank God it was covered under warranty.
Yesterday, the same thing happened. Service tech just left. They are going to come back and place a brand new compressor, again, in less than 2 years.
I’m over this. I live in Central Mississippi. It’s freaking hot.

  9. Christine Knight says:

I installed a new Trane system on Friday 5/20/22 On Sunday 5/22/22 I had NO COOL AIRB BLOWING in 90 degree VA weather. I called to report issue. An on -call specialist came out to discover a leaking coil. He added lost refrigerant and said he needed to order a new coil on Monday when they open. He did not know when he would be able to install the new coil or how long the house would stay cool with the refrigerant he added. This happened TWO DAYS AFTER INSTALL OF A BRAND NEW SYSTEM. After reading these reviews I am horrified. I have a remaining balance of $3200 to pay on Monday for the faulty system. What are my legal rights? I just want them to take their junk back and go with the Goodman that I was originally going to purchase. Please help. Advice appreciated.

  10. A M O'Connor says:

Purchased a 3.5 ton system in October 2020 in Florida. 2 weeks ago it stopped working. Had HVAC company come out and found not only did I have a leak but a hole in my coil. My Hvac company put in for the replacement for the waranteed part. Took 1 week to get in Florida heat. Between cost of HVAC company installing it and the replacement of 8 lbs of coolant I’m out $2075. How do I go about getting Trane to reimburse me what they clearly know is an issue and continue to sell.

    1. Monika Bonn-Miller says:

I would like an answer to that question as well!!!!!
Lawyers need to file another class action lawsuit!!!!
