Sunbeam rice cooker class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Elizabeth McCabe filed a class action lawsuit against Sunbeam Products Inc.
  • Why: McCabe claims Sunbeam misleadingly advertises that an Oster-brand rice cooker it sells has the capacity to cook six cups of rice.
  • Where: The Sunbeam class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges that Sunbeam Products misleadingly advertises that an Oster-brand rice cooker it sells on Amazon has the capacity to cook six cups of rice at a time.

Plaintiff Elizabeth McCabe claims the capacity for Sunbeam’s Oster-brand “6-Cup Rice Cooker with Steamer, Red” is based on the size of its own rice cooker cups, not the standard cup size of eight fluid ounces.

McCabe argues Sunbeam “intended” for consumers to believe that its rice cooker cups were the same size as standard cups, and that they would rely on that belief when deciding to purchase the device.

“Sunbeam knew, and intended, that the Reasonable Belief Class Members would rely upon their belief regarding the Rice Cooker Capacity in deciding whether to purchase a Rice Cooker,” the Sunbeam class action claims.

McCabe wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased an the rice cooker through amazon.com.

Class action says actual capacity of Oster rice cooker ‘materially less’ than six standard cups

McCabe alleges that the actual capacity of the Oster rice cooker is approximately 36.5 fluid ounces or 4.56 standard cups, “materially less” than six standard cups.

“McCabe and the Reasonable Belief Class Members were materially misled by the term ‘6-Cup’ in the Rice Cooker Title,” the Sunbeam class action says.

McCabe claims Sunbeam violated consumer protection laws from multiple states, including Alabama, Alaska, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Utah.

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests an award of statutory damages for herself and all class members.

Sunbeam recalled around 43,000 queen-sized heated blankets in March 2023 over concerns they could overheat, posing fire and burn hazards.
