Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Our 36 inch LG French Door fridge still cools but runs all the time, too much…. more than before. And we did have temperature fluctuations. I defrosted it and adjusted to lowest temperature and it did cool. But it runs all night. Fortunately we have another French door fridge in the house. Happy to report it is a Maytag and works perfectly. We also have a bar fridge. After reading this, and it continues to deteriorate, we will not try and repair it, but replace it with a Maytag. It’s sad because it is an environmental waste and pollution to recycle this. LG should be sued/charged for that too. It is a design flaw and they deny it still? The latest is I have tried to adjust the temperature up to max and see what happens…. running excessive also means hydro waste and cost in addition to noise.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite French door refrigerator in 2016 and the Freezer stopped working. Just spent 169.00 to have Sears come and tell us the compressor designed by LG is bad. How can I become part of the class action law suit as I have heard LG isn’t covering people that bought the Kenmore brand with the LG compressors? I am so angry.

Is also 2.5 years old, bought in December 2028, now June 2021, total failure. LG ( literally garbage) appliances are the worst of the worst.

Having problems with my LG. French Door LFX too 2017. Noticed the motor staying on too long with increasing noise. Cleaned the coils at back. Spent the day and Took apart inside panel to inspect fans. Noticed ice and frost on cooling coils and a large Chuck fell out. The fans both worked. Put back together and the motor is still is running constantly and temps of fridge are gradually getting warmer. Extremely disappointed with LG. I researched it carefully and felt safe.

LG stands for load of garbage. What a complete piece of crap product and crap company. Have a fridge that broke, surprise. Tech came out and said that there is no way to fix it as the parts and software no longer work together. I’ve heard of planned obsolescence but this is forced obsolescence. NEVER BUY ANYTHING MADE BY LG AGAIN. That’s the only way we can win.

Well ware should I start feels like eternity! We bought our LG 4 door has bottom freezer and a pull out draw for drinks etc ,top 2 door fir frig in 2015 November was great up to 2018 where the noise started happening, knew that’s not normal. LG had a way that Bluetooth can diagnose so they fixed that. Then this year August 2020 was not cooling that good thought well maybe to much food inside. No because freezer started my ice cream and meat started to thaw. Then the ice maker started would not dump ice from ice maker so we called a repair person he said 3 weeks he’s backed up. Ok he comes says no I won’t work on this you should be under warranty and to call LG. Ok I did and as most of you know that’s about an hour and half waiting. So I told them and they said they would send someone out 2 weeks ok mean time we were fortunate that we already purchase a basic frig for the garage 2 years earlier so we moved all food to frig in garage. So tech comes out says he won’t work on this he will tell his manager he took photos and submitted paperwork that this is totally shot. So we wait no one is calling us. 2 weeks go by still nothing. We called back. We are waiting on the techs paperwork RN #. Crap like that. Then called again they finally after transfer to other departments we are talking to escalate dept. she says we are waiting on tech he never said it’s not repairable he has to get that paperwork in. Oh by the way I tipped that guy 40 bucks so he would get this ball rolling faster. That didn’t happen. She then says we will send someone out we need 2 people to give opinion REALLY I already had one before there’s. Well 2 weeks later he comes , now mind you I’ve been cooking getting drinks etc and when you are cooking you might have to go back and forth 5 times for mustard Mayo etc been doing this since August. Now we thought maybe we can go get a new refrigerator on our own and they can cut us a check how much we don’t know. If we do we don’t want them taking old one then we have no proof. Yes we have the paperwork. So we didn’t now this guy come out starts fixing it I said I heard it’s not replaceable well we can take the whole back and replace. Ok now this frig has been sitting was wiped out but was unplugged. We open it and it has mold everywhere. The smell was terrible. He says just wipe out and leave doors open replaced some parts then ordered more says next week another tech will finish. Mind you this has been going on since August. We went online bout bamboo charcoal bags that tech told us we should do. It’s been 3 days and smell is still here. They come by Tuesday to finish working on it. I don’t think this is gonna work. I’m fed up with LG the stress they have put us through. They have taken most of our days off 2 days a week we both work thankfully in this crazy world we’re in we’ve been blessed to have been working this whole time. I’m so done mentally! P.S. I recorded video of there tech showing and explaining this crazy mess. Yes I’m joining the law suit.

  8. Annette Faltinowski says:

We are stuck in the same vicious cycle of talking to LG and trying to find a repair center to fix our 4-year-old expensive French Door fridge. No one will work on it, and it has been broken since mid-August. After getting LG to agree to cover repair costs, we call them back to get a status and they act like they had no clue on covering repair costs. Trying to escalate beyond the call center rep is next to impossible. Talking with the various appliance repair centers, no one will work on LG or replace compressors since it is time-consuming and needs an authorized trained repair person they don’t employee. Ugh! I think LG just hopes you get frustrated enough to go out and buy a new fridge and stop calling.

  9. Trulia Shields says:

My 2016 French door fridge died today, I hear it working but it is not cooling. It’s Sunday so I will call in the morning when they open. Wish me luck!

  10. Susan says:

I was going to buy lg fridge, nobody mentioned what other brand they choose for their new fridge.
