Joining a barrage of Roundup cancer lawsuits, a man from Lander, Wyo. says that chemicals in Roundup weedkiller caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after he used it on his property.

According to plaintiff Jace F., he used Roundup to control weeds on his property between 2008 and 2014. He also claims that he was exposed to Roundup before 2008 because his neighbor used it. Jace says that he was diagnosed with cancer in July 2015 who “was proximately and cased by exposure to [Monsanto’s] roundup products.”

Allegedly, Roundup’s maker, Monsanto, knew or should have known that chemicals in roundup Roundup could cause cancer, but marketed it as safe nonetheless. Monsanto was recently purchased by Bayer, just as a flood of claims around the possibly cancer-causing nature of Roundup began to gain traction.

This case is one of many that was filed after another person who filed a Roundup lawsuit received a big payout. In August, a jury awarded a former groundskeeper $289 million, agreeing with his claims that his use of Roundup over the course of his career at least contributed to him developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

This large sum was later reduced by a higher court, and Monsanto is appealing the verdict. Nonetheless, the success of this case was a large part of why more lawsuits of a similar ilk are now being filed against the “life science” giant Bayer and Monsanto, according to news sources.

The Guardian reports that Monsanto and Bayer are facing over 9,000 lawsuits from people who claim that they developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a result of their use of Roundup.

In February, a local news source in Washington noted that a Washington landscaper filed a Roundup lawsuit, also claiming that he was not warned that the product could cause cancer. Like the groundskeeper, this Washington landscaper claimed that exposure to Roundup on the job led him to develop cancer.

One of the active ingredients in Roundup is glyphosate, which had been categorized as a possible carcinogen to humans, meaning that the main chemicals in Roundup could possibly cause cancer.

According to new research, people who have had high exposures to Roundup may have a 41 percent increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

However, Monsanto continues to insist that there is “no legitimate scientific research showing a definitive association between glyphosate and NHL or any type of cancer,” according to The Guardian.

Bayer spokeswoman Charla Lord wrote in an email to the Casper Star-Tribune that “there is an extensive body of scientific data and analysis, including reviews by regulatory authorities in the U.S. and E.U., and approvals in 160 countries, which support the conclusion that glyphosate-based products are safe when used as directed. Bayer stands behind these products and will vigorously defend them.”

Many people who say that they developed cancer after using Roundup strongly disagree with Monsanto’s safety claims, saying that Monsanto makes these claims “with complete disregard and reckless indifference” to the safety of users.

If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
