Seven electronics manufacturers have agreed to pay more than $39 million to resolve price-fixing claims regarding CRT monitors and televisions.

The settlement will benefit Washington consumers who purchased a CRT monitor or television between March 1, 1995 and Nov. 25, 2007; resided in Washington or had headquarters in the state at the time of purchase; bought the CRT monitor/TV from a retailer; and purchased the product for personal use instead of resale.

The price-fixing class action lawsuit was filed by the Washington State Attorney General. The lawsuit claimed that seven electronics manufacturers had conspired together to fix, raise, maintain, or stabilize the prices of cathode ray tubes (CRT).

A CRT is a vacuum tube that used to be the industry standard for displaying images in televisions and monitors. Before the rise of LCD, Plasma, and LED displays, CRT displays were commonly used.

This allegedly resulted in higher prices for monitors and televisions that used CRT technology. The Washington State Attorney General argued that consumers were harmed when they paid artificially high prices for their CRT televisions and computer monitors.

Although the companies do not admit any wrongdoing, the seven electronics manufacturers have agreed to pay separate settlements in order to resolve the claims against them. The details of each manufacturer’s payments are as follows:

  • Chunghwa – $125,000
  • Hitachi – $275,000
  • LG – $1.5 million
  • Panasonic – $450,000
  • Philips – $7 million
  • Samsung – $29 million
  • Toshiba – $1.3 million

According to the Washington State Attorney General’s announcement, Class Members can collect up to $20 per CRT monitor and up to $6 per CRT television if they file a valid claim by May 16, 2019. Claims can be submitted through the settlement website or can be printed and mailed to the settlement administrator.

There is no exclusion deadline for this settlement nor is there a final approval hearing.
