The U.S. Department of Justice has secured nearly $4 million in remission from a Walmart gift card scam.
The remission program benefits consumers who purchased a Walmart gift card between April 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, as a result of a fraudulent scheme in which scammers directed victims to purchase gift cards.
The Walmart scams allegedly started in 2015 when fraudsters instructed victims to purchase Walmart gift cards ranging from $500 to $1,000.Â
Between 2016 and 2017, Walmart reportedly froze the balances of gift cards suspected to be a part of the fraudulent scheme and the Department of Justice sought this frozen money to refund customers.Â
Walmart gift card scams can occur in a variety of ways and often target consumers by posing as loved ones in trouble or a legitimate company or government agency.Â
The Department of Justice filed a complaint for forfeiture of the $3,958,060.84 in gift card balances frozen by Walmart. This money is now available for remission payments.
Consumers can receive a remission payment based on the amount loaded onto the Walmart gift cards they purchased. Payments will be reduced if consumers already received payments from a bank or another source. Remission payments will not cover collateral expenses related to the scheme.Â
There is no exclusion or objection deadline for this remission.
There is no final approval hearing for the Walmart gift card scam remission.
In order to receive a payment, consumers must file a remission form by July 14, 2023.

Purchase reloadable gift cards for our kids in November 2022 for $250 each. All together $500 and when they went to use them they had zero balance! Super embarrassing and ended up never getting a refund for the defective cards.
Please add me. I had bought cards and got scammed and was told nothing they can do i also had a returned without recite a couple times put on there gift card and went to use it and it was empty and they wouldnt make it right even though i just got it .
One of them there money part had closed while shopping and i returned next day and they said oh well like i spent it . They are rip offs in so many ways i hate walmart. And it sucks if were u live thats the only choice of a store u can afford to use sometimes.
Target has done the same in a lawsuit from i think 2020, and they refuse to payout! I cannot believe it’s now been years, they need to just do what’s right! They should comp for all the years long wait as well, not just refunding what was taken.
Please add me
.
Walmart has refused to refund or reload gift cards in the amount of $400 dollars. (2 X $200). The cards were purchased in Dec2022 and had zero balance when redeemed.
How is this Walmart’s fault for people lacking common sense?
Wal-Mart froze these gift cards & pocketed the money that we paid to buy them there by making them the fraudsters & thieves
I never paid over 500 on the scheme…it was a little less than 300 and they tried to get me for more….I talked to a Walmart associate and they told me I was being scammed.I told the neighbors… Luckily I was able to help three elderly people…It was a thing in the mail stating we won something…We had to buy gift cards….That should be an indicator of a scam…
PLEASE ADD ME
I went to Sam club and paid for 4 gift card went out to use and the side over the phone that it was know money was on these card. So Walmart side that we don’t do refund once you open and took these silver marks off.
That’s was 5 card of $ 500.00 each card when you call these cards in they said it was a penny left, so I said to him I just came out the store to call it in now it’s only a penny left.
There are lawsuits pending for this. Walmart knows that the cards have been compromised. The code on the cards are scanned and downloaded. As soon as someone purchases a card and puts money on it, the scammer is notified and they go into the card and transfer the money off the card. I was part of a named class action lawsuit for this and was recently awarded $2,500 as part of the settlement. It’s worth the effort to find the lawfirms that are filing class actions against walmart for their lack of effort to control the problem.
