Tesla agreed to pay $6.08 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it raised the price of its Solar Roof, surprising contracted customers with unexpected costs.

The settlement benefits consumers who entered into a purchase and/or installation contract for a Tesla Solar Roof, with or without a Powerwall energy storage system, and were informed of a price increase in April 2021.

According to the class action lawsuit, Tesla violated its contracts with Solar Roof consumers by unexpectedly increasing installation costs in April 2021. Plaintiffs say this unexpected price increase violated federal and state consumer protection laws.

Tesla’s Solar Roof is a solar-powered roofing system that captures energy from the sun and stores it for later use.

Tesla hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to a $6.08 million settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, all class members are eligible for a one-time payment of $100.

Alternatively, class members can file a claim and potentially receive larger payments. These payments will compensate claimants for out-of-pocket losses related to canceling their Solar Roof contract or payment toward increased installation costs.

Out-of-pocket losses covered by the settlement include utility and landscaping expenses, roof-related work or repairs, electrical work or expenses, expenses related to Powerwalls added with the April 2021 price increase, certain HOA costs and more. Class members must submit documentation along with the claim form.

Class members may also submit a claim to recover increased installation costs. These claimants must have proof of the original Tesla Solar Roof contract, the new contract with an updated price quote and any updates to that price quote, in addition to proof of payment and installation. Instructions for submitting documentation can be found on the claim form.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 2, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for March 7, 2024.

No claim form is required to receive the $100 flat-rate settlement payment. However, in order to receive reimbursement for alleged losses, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 2, 2024.
