Colgate-Palmolive Co. has agreed to a class action settlement in a multidistrict litigation that accused the manufacturer of Softsoap Antibacterial hand soap of deceptive marketing practices. The Softsoap class action settlement was reached after two years of litigation from plaintiffs who claimed that the active ingredient triclosan that was supposed to “eliminate 99 percent of germs” is unable to do what it promised.
The antibacterial hand soap class action lawsuit MDL cited studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2000 which discovered that triclosan does not kill most common bacteria in an average five-second hand washing. The plaintiffs also pointed to other studies that showed triclosan didn’t kill any more bacteria than soap and water.
The Colgate-Palmolive class action settlement states that the defendant will refrain from making three of the five statements that the lead plaintiffs found to be misleading. The Softsoap manufacturer also agreed to use triclosan in its products “only in a manner consistent with final FDA regulations.”
The preliminary approval of the Softsoap class action lawsuit settlement was filed in a New Hampshire federal court in May 2015.

agree Grumpyduck! Its amazing how many people claim to have bought for years and now they are offended and want a darn dollar back! Sheesh!
Where is a CA settlement for all the useres of all the wines containing arsenic and one for all the bogus supplements we bought at CVS, Target, GNC, Walmart & Walgreens?
Deception…just like most products which claims to brighten your teeth with tooth whitening in the toothpaste. Or lose weight with a simple pill, or fluids. Scammers and greed will take your money at ease.
I thought it did what it advertised!
Unbelievable, this is a family product of years of purchasing. Unfortunately the purchasers will not see too much of the money. We will be lucky to receive a $20 check especially if you do not have the receipts for the products.
Wow! i cant believe this i have bought this a long time .. Looks like they would give the people some money back that is not right .
I am sure the lawyers who filed got paid
YES, I bet they did , at least give a free soap or something………..
I wonder how many millions of consumers have purchased this item because it specifically states that it is Antibacterial. And the only penalty Colgate-Palmolive receives for its deception is that it will correct its false and misleading label? It is a shame what these companies get away with at our expense.
It’s a dirty shame. It’s sad we don’t even get a bottle of soap!
The lawyers agreed to this settlement – they got paid – and they agreed with the company that plaintiffs get nothing
No monetary benefits for consumers – they are simply agreeing to make a labeling change.
I have brought this soap a many times at target smart and final where to file claim?
