Public Storage

Public Storage has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it deceived some of its tenants by misrepresenting that it would send the premiums collected through the sale of self-storage insurance to an independent insurance company. If you rented storage units from Public Storage in the state of Florida and purchased self-insurance policies, you may be entitled to benefits from the class action settlement.

The proposed self-storage insurance settlement will resolve allegations that Public Storage deceived its Florida tenants by representing to them that it would send the premiums collected through the sale of self-storage insurance to an independent insurance company, when it actually kept more than 75 percent of the premiums paid by the Florida residents.

Public Storage denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the self-storage insurance class action lawsuit to avoid the costs and uncertainty associated with trial.

The Public Storage insurance class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Oct. 21, 2015.

Class Members who wish to opt out of the Public Storage settlement must do so no later than Jan. 11, 2016.

UPDATE: On Feb. 29, 2016, a Florida federal judge gave final approval to a $5 million class action settlement over allegations Public Storage overcharged Florida customers for self-storage insurance.

UPDATE 2: There was a single objector to the settlement so until that’s resolved, the Claims Administrator cannot pay out claims.

Public Storage is a scam I believe.. We rented for a year in Bordentown NJ, we missed 2 months rent because we had more important bills to pay, before we knew it the cut off our lock and put on a new one and charged us. OK, no big deal we were in arrears and paid. Finally we were able to remove our property from public storage. I left the lock on the door to protect myself from someone else that might cause damage or anything to that unit, not that it would happen but you never know anyone. Both of us told the front desk and in writing that all of our property has been removed and we do not want to renew our lease. A few months later I’m getting phone calls and emails and letters demanding I owe 4 months rent because they could not rent our old unit because I left the lock on it. They even put my name in the paper for an auction for whatever property was left inside. Big laugh on them because the unit was empty. I called them countless of times telling them i am not paying for those last few months. I even said \why didn’t you just cut the lock off? You had no problem cutting it off before\ they didn’t want to hear it. Well screw them and I never paid.. Yesterday 3/4/16 I received a notice stating I’m a member of this lawsuit stating they violated the truth in consumer contract warranty and notice act. I wonder what this is about since it’s Saturday and the lawyers that was appointed to me are not available to find out what’s actually going on. Maybe I’ll win a $2-$3 bucks..

  8. edwin says:

We been renting for almost 3 years and the insurance goes up last may , it is getting expensive. sadly a lot of people lost their homes due to the mortgage crisis and we are one of them. now we are renting an apt. and a storage. A lot of people is using the storage not because they want.. it is because they do not have other choice.

  9. Holden Up says:

I rented at Public Storage and paid insurance. I admit I was pretty stupid cause I only stored a few books and some boxes. I should have dropped them off with my aunt cause she has a huge storage shed.

  10. Daneshia Allen says:

I rented from public storage last year . I had to get their insurance I filed for a claim I was checking to see if anyone recieved it ..
