PayPal class action settlement

A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit alleging PayPal Inc. improperly handled disputed transactions and improperly placed holds on PayPal Accounts. If you had an active PayPal account between April 19, 2006 and Nov. 5, 2015, your rights may be affected by this class action settlement.

The proposed $3.2 million PayPal class action settlement will resolve allegations that PayPal improperly handled disputed transactions and placed holds, reserves or limitations on customers’ accounts without notice, and in some cases suspended or closed accounts. The plaintiffs claim that PayPal failed to provide customers with monthly account statements and error-resolution notices as required by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.

PayPal operates an online payment processing service that facilitates payments between buyers and sellers of goods and services sold online. According to the PayPal class action lawsuit, the PayPal User Agreement indicated that upon a breach of its terms, PayPal “may hold funds in a seller’s account by placing reserves on accounts and/or limiting and/or suspending seller’s accounts and holding the funds in the accounts for up to and in some cases exceeding 180 days.”

The plaintiffs, who had used PayPal as sellers, claim that they all had funds in their PayPal accounts frozen for 180 days, but PayPal failed to inform them about the type of activity that triggered the account freeze. Further, PayPal allegedly failed to provide them with an opportunity to remedy the situation and avoid holds being placed on their accounts in the future.

PayPal denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the account hold class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of trial. The PayPal class action settlement was preliminarily approved on Nov. 5, 2015.

Up to $2,000.

Claims Class Members may elect to make a Basic Claim or an Alternate Claim.

Injunctive Relief:
PayPal has agreed to revise its User Agreement and add certain disclosures about its use of fraud and risk modeling. It has also agreed to change its policy with regard to requests for information, and to disclose the reason for a hold, reserve or limitation as long as this disclosure is not inconsistent with PayPal’s security requirements. Great news! I received, on Saturday, October 28, 2017, a check dated on October 24, 2017, in the amount of $11.57. It was much needed. I am glad to have this site, as I have been part of several settlements. They always show up when I really need them. Thank you for letting everyone know what class action suits are available. Without your site, I would not have known of any of them, except one that I received a post card about. Keep up the great work.

    1. Boxers says:

      I echo that

  2. Lissa says:

I live in NW FL and today is Sunday. I still have not received any check from Paypal yet. I did move since I filed. I don’t know if it will be forwarded in the mail or returned back to them :(

You’ll need to try contacting the settlement administrator or class counsel to inquire about your check and the possibility of a reissue: https://www.accountholdsettlement.com/Home/ContactUs. Good luck!

      1. Lissa says:

Great thank you! I sure will get a hold of someone :)

      2. Tracie says:

Yes. I did that fourm of contact in June 2017 for my address change. I had anticipated since my confirmation number holds my account as both that I would have been entitled to the first settlement. The administrator sent me a letter reply. I then sent my information for account update along with my documents. The administrator had not understood my reason for contacting it’s office. It was mentioned under the first settlement no I hadn’t received anything as advertised on the web sites announcement where acknowledge 1/2016 a copy of the administrator initial confirmation number I was given for both was mailed to the office as a reply. Hence October 24 three business days I’d only be pulling my leg to wait 2 to 6 weeks for the advertised settlement mail out day.

  3. Gladys Goldfein says:

payments are $11.57 per account IF you had funds withheld during the claims period. the settlement fund was only $3.2M (before taxes and claims admin/attys fees) and with about a hundred thousand valid claims, it was to be expected the payments were gonna be this small.

  4. MeMe says:

    NY $23.15 *

It says the attached check constitutes full satisfaction,
    can’t appeal, once cashed and
You CANNOT cash this thru a check cashing place.
It is clearly written on the check.
(Who says they can do that??)

  5. Melissa says:

This sucks! $11.57 check for ruining our businesses and lives. SMH

    1. John Paul says:

This is ridiculous, Paypal ruined me, holds over 10K for 180 days and had to refund customers as couldnt ship items and wait half a year for money. Never had a single neg feedback until they do their illegal manipulating. They are CROOKS and should be jailed. Now they insult us with 11.00!!

      1. Melissa says:

Yep. I never had a negative one before either. It was something I was very proud of. They held the funds to collect interest and make money off of everyone is what they did. I don’t even know if I want to try again with them. That is a lot of hard work to get where I was. I don’t trust them. How can we with a 11 dollar slap in the face?

  6. Laverne says:
