A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging LG-brand front-loading washing machines were prone to developing mold and/or foul odors.

If you purchased an LG front-loading washing machine between Jan. 1, 2002 and Dec. 31, 2006, you may be entitled to compensation from the moldy washer class action settlement.

The proposed settlement, if approved, will resolve eight years of litigation over LG’s allegedly moldy washers. The plaintiffs claim that LG-brand front-loading washers contain a design defect that causes the washers to develop biofilm on which bacteria, fungus and mold feeds, resulting in noxious odors and ruined laundry.

The LG washer class action lawsuit asserts that this biofilm accumulates because the washers fail to clean themselves.

LG has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the moldy washer class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of ongoing litigation. The LG moldy washer class action settlement received preliminary approval on June 17, 2016.

Class Members who wish to exclude themselves from or object to the LG moldy washer settlement must do so no later than Sept. 8, 2016.

Who’s Eligible

The LG settlement website defines Class Members as follows: “All residents of the United States and its territories who were the original purchasers of one or more ‘Washers’, for home and not commercial use, between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2006.”

According to the settlement documents, the term “Washer” simply means any LG-brand front-loading washing machine.

Potential Award

Class Members who have experienced a mold or odor issue may choose to receive one of the following benefits from the moldy washer settlement:

  • A check for $35, or
  • A $105 Washer Rebate Certificate (redeemable for the purchase of a washer from an authorized washer dealer after the effective date of the LG washer settlement). NOTE: This rebate certificate will expire 12 months from the effective date of the settlement.
Proof of Purchase

If you are not a prequalified Class Member, you must submit with your Claim Form either of the following:

  • A photograph of the washer’s serial number, or
  • Proof of purchase of the washer (such as a credit card receipt, cancelled check, warranty card, invoice/receipt from an authorized LG USA dealer, etc.).

Prequalified Class Members have already been identified in LG’s databases as having purchased a washer that’s covered by this settlement and do not need to provide any supporting documentation.

My clothes are way more expensive than this little 35.00 check! and NO i will NEVER buy LG again!

  2. cher sterling says:

They are crooks i bought mine in 2014 and its now 2016. Ive complained many times of the mold and smell it does not matter how many times you wipe out the rubber, leave the door open or clean it. Its still there. I will never buy another LG front load washer again. They honestly do not care they are still making them the same way.

  3. Sherry Pierce says:

My LG front-loader was also purchased well after 2006. We live in a parsonage and the hook-up for washer/dryer is in my kitchen. It’s embarrassing and aesthetically not pleasing to have to leave the door swung open into the room all the time so it won’t stink, but that’s what we have to do. Can’t believe the settlement ended with 2006 models because the problem still exists on much later models. Glad someone took them on… maybe $35.00 is way too little for the issue, but at least they had to admit some culpability.

  4. Grace wade says:

I agree, If you bought an LG after “09” it still has the same problem, they claim they fixed it by adding the Tub Clean to the machine. That doesn’t work either , I have used it and I still have too keep my door open after every wash . I have decided my next washer won’t be a front loader, never again!

  5. Lee Scholl says:

We have an LG Front loader washer and it a piece of you know what it has Mold
and stinks were going to get rid of it. I’ll never buy anything from LG again.$35.00
and I payed over $800.00 for it. Thar what I call a RIP Off.

  6. Brenda Taulbee says:

Not only did it stink, but it cost over $4,000 to replace my hardwood floor from a drain valve that broke on it and it flooded the place.

    1. Christine A. says:

Another class action law suit is in order. I also had the same problem. Bought in 2015, rubber seal is moldy, AND I also had a leak that cost me over10,000$ in damages in my home. Yes where is the lawsuit for all of us that had major damage from a faulty washing machine that caused total re- sheet rocking in my basement.

      1. H.B says:

I also have a 2015 paid 1200+ for it, moldy stinks and not even worth it. we do need a new lawsuit. I agree :)

  7. Sandra R Jones says:

What happens to those of us who purchased a front loading LG washer in 2013? We are experiencing ALL of these issues with the machine! Why does the suit only go through Dec. 31, 2008? Does LG think they corrected the problem after 2008? Are they serious? I despise this washer! It was very expensive. We purchased an LG washer and dryer at a Best Buy store for our new house. I wish I had never seen them!

    1. Kim says:

I have a 2013 top loader lg with the same mold problem and the washer puts holes in our clothes and towels. I hate it. The smell is horrible

  8. Mary Salinas says:

I took the $35.00 but like others have siad that is a slap in the face considering all the money spent to try and get that awful smell out of the washer. I sometimes gag at the smell and continue to wash the tub, clean the door after every wash as well as clean the rubber around the door. I’m sure you all make millions from all the purchases and all we get is a swift kick in the butt. Sounds like you all need to rethink the amount, especially when with out the consumer there would be no business. SMH

  9. ROB says:

$35.00, That’s a slap in the face. Box store’s should stop carrying those manufacturer brands. But then again, if they go under the American tax paying people will have to foot the bill. How about the people who are highly allergic to mold.

  10. Katherine A pairrett-ives says:

Really $35.00 some new laundry soap and $105.00 does not pay for a new washer. My washer cost was over $900.00 back in 2008. What an insult and should be a crime. So the rich just get richer, with no responsibility to the customer that makes them rich. If you all think this is justice you are also the criminal.

    1. Gabriel Johnston says:

Better than nothing being you didn’t put a single penny of your own money to hire a lawyer and Sue LG CORP. So shut up and stop your dam bitchin you ungrateful dirt ball

      1. Char says:

Hey moldy the lawyers get paid by the losing companies that are selling the M O L D machines.

    2. MaryJane OBRIEN says:

You’re out of luck anyways. I bought my LG front load in 2008 for $900. This settlement only included washers purchased up ’til Dec 2006!! What about the rest of us?

      1. Mattie says:

Bought mine in 2015 and having the same problem. No cleaning of any sort gets rid of the smell. Wish I had known before I bought it. Why isn’t this info available to the public?

      2. Char says:

I am sooooo pissed…..what the heck……I don’t need a measly little rebate I need a new washer… Which is going to,cost a he_ll of a lot more than you are offering. AND they are still selling them without telling people about the M O L D. what the frick people…yes we should be pissed. 2006 what about the rest of us who bought after 2006 and the people still buying this piece of M O L D..
And to the person who said we should be satisfied with the settlement…..I don’t give a rats as_ what it cost to get this teeny-weeny little settlement besides the you fool the loosers are us stuck with this piece of crap. And the lawyers should have had the descency to get each of us a new washer or at least a full rebate for the MOLDY one we bought.
Do you really think any of us would have bought this front loading piece of crap if the salesman said “Oh and by the way your clothes will get mold on them”. Geeeez grow up and smell the M O L D

        1. Sue Gnacinski says:

I purchased 12-02-08 and have similar scank film on front of inside of door.

          1. Kelly Pritchett says:

Purchased mine in 2008 also, why did they stop early. That refund is BS!!!
