The County of Los Angeles has agreed to pay a total of $53 million to settle class action allegations that women inmates were subject to degrading strip searches while entering or returning to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif.

The settlement represents the largest payout in the countyโ€™s history.

The Lynwood strip search settlement website notes that Class Members include those who were subjected to a strip search in a group outside of the bus garage while entering or returning from the Los Angeles Sheriffโ€™s Department Lynwood Jail between March 5, 2008 and Jan. 31, 2015.ย

Lead plaintiffs claimed that thousands of inmates were subjected to unnecessary and violating strip searches. Plaintiff Jessica Almaraz alleged that she was strip searched a total of five times during her time at the Sheriff Departmentโ€™s Century Regional Detention Facility.

According to the female inmates, women were often strip searched in groups. They say that they were forced to take off their clothes and be invasively strip searched in front of other women. Allegedly, deputies degraded them and yelled profanity during these searches.

The plaintiffs claim that this treatment violated their Fourth Amendment rights.

Eligible Class Members will be able to receive at least $200 for one strip search, while those who experienced numerous strip searches are likely to end up with thousands of dollars.

Inmates must complete and return a Claim Form to receive monetary recovery. According to the strip search class action, qualifying individuals should have received a Claim Form in the mail. Class Members may also compete a Claim Form online.ย

Class Members can exclude themselves from the settlement, or object to it by June 4, 2020. Those who excluded themselves from the settlement retain their right to pursue independent litigation over the strip searches, but waive their rights to claim benefits from this settlement.

Former inmates who do nothing will receive no benefits, and waive their rights to pursue independent litigation.ย

Class Members can also attend the final approval hearing on July 20, 2020, in which a judge will decide whether or not the settlement will be approved.

Whoโ€™s Eligible

Individuals who were subjected to a strip search in a group outside of the bus garage while entering or returning from the Los Angeles Sheriffโ€™s Department Lynwood Jail between March 5, 2008 and Jan. 31, 2015.ย

Potential Award

At least $200 and up to thousands of dollars.

No Class Member who files a claim will receive less than $200 (for one search under the least bad conditions). Persons with the highest number of searches โ€“ up to 50 โ€“ will likely receive thousands of dollars.

The worse part to me is having homosexual women glare at you while being searched. It might as well be a man.

I think they just updated that to July.

        1. Huera says:

I just read something about October 2021 I think theyโ€™re going to keep moving the dates around hoping we give up or something. Those deputies have been degrading women since sybil brand, twin towers, & now Lynnwood. I havenโ€™t been to jail in 9 or 10 years but if they were to pay me for every strip search they made me do I could probably pay of my mortgage. Lol

    2. Yep says:

The detainees are the ones who werenโ€™t supposed to be searched as the inmates or the sentenced women did,,this settlement is for the detainees,,and the women that were already sentenced qualify for 200 bucks

      1. Juk says:

        We want our money!!

  4. Tracy Morgan says:

What i want to know is who is getting the interest on that 53 million that is just sitting in some bank. The lawyers? The county? You can bet its not going to be us. This is bullshit!!

    1. Ughhh says:

Dont hold your breath , the amount will be 200 dollars for those who have under 50 searches ..it tells you in writing when you look up the settlement

      1. Brooke gamble says:

Its says its only going to pay UP to 50 searches. NO MORE THAN 50

    2. ? says:

Iโ€™m not agreeing with you ,they will go based on lack of privacy and most important if you were a detainee, thatโ€™s what this settlement is all about that the detainees werenโ€™t supposed to be treated as inmates ,,,for the women that were already sentenced and were searched under 50 times will qualify for 200 dollars

      1. Amarie says:

No if you were searched once during the time of dates they set then you get paid $200 and if you were searched more than once depending on how many times it could add up to thousands. So Iโ€™m guessing $200 per damn search. One search compensation for the torment and humiliation should be thousands not no damn $200

  5. lisa says:

I WANT TO KNOW WHY THE LAWERS ARE NOT WORKING ON THE PAY OUT NOW. THEY HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET THAT DONE BEFORE MAY AND IF SOMETHIBNG CHANGES IT WILL BE EASIER TO FIX. THEY ARE GETTING PAID. WHEN THIS IF FINAL IN MAY, THEY SHOULD HAVE THE BREAKDOWN DOWN AND CHECKS READY TO GO. THEY ARE GETTING 18 PLUS MILLION

  6. Ramona "jack" malone says:

I was in Lynnwood in 2009 . Was my first time locked up n let me tell ya these were the most degrading . Hateful Nd down right cruel people Iโ€™ve ever met . As well as being stripped n made to face 50 other women we were watched by men as well. This happened everything we left n came back for court too. They would scream in ur face call u discussing. Fate . Ugly. Nasty worthless n pretty much anything degrading they could think up as well as look for any reason to give u a hard time . I remember some guards would tell us we couldnโ€™t even look at them . Would make u pull ur tampon out n throw it in the center of the floor in front of 50 other people. Called us names . And the list literally goes on and on . This place needs to go down. Its a true hell hole

    Update:

On August 11, 2020, the Federal District Court approved the Settlement in this case. On September 10, 2020, a former Class Member filed an appeal challenging the decision to approve the Settlement. The Court dismissed the appeal on February 12, 2021. The Settlement will not become effective until May 13, 2021 at the earliest and payments will be sent as soon as possible after that time. Once the Settlement becomes effective, it will take two to three months to process claims, calculate the amount due to each Class Member and begin payments. Additional updates will be posted as they become available.

Address updates can be emailed or mailed to the Settlement Administrator. You may email your request to [email protected] or you may complete the form on the Contact Us page. Please include your old mailing address along with your request for verification purposes.
