Consumers who had fraudulent tax returns filed in their name may be eligible for two years of free TransUnion credit monitoring under a Intuit TurboTax class action settlement.
Class Members eligible for this free service include anyone who had a fraudulent tax return filed in their name through Intuit TurboTax for tax years 2014, 2015, or 2016.
The recent settlement resolves class action allegations against Intuit which accused the company of failing to protect consumers information and prevent fraudulent tax activities.
The Inuit TurboTax class action was filed in 2015 by plaintiffs who allegedly had fraudulent tax returns filed in their name through the TurboTax service.
“For years, Intuit has knowingly maintained lax authentication and security protocols that fall below industry standards, allowing fraudsters to easily open fake TurboTax accounts and file fraudulent tax returns through TurboTax in innocent taxpayers’ names,” the Intuit class action lawsuit states.
The plaintiffs claim that Intuit knew that its security was deficient but chose to sacrifice this in order to obtain millions of dollars in tax preparation fees.
The Intuit class action lawsuit alleges that Class Members have experienced actual financial harm as they have had to pay for credit monitoring and identity theft protection as well as having their tax refunds delayed.
After years of litigation, Intuit and the plaintiffs agreed to settle the TurboTax class action in October 2018.
Intuit does not admit any wrongdoing by settling the TurboTax class action lawsuit, and the settlement provides a path for both parties to resolve the claims.
The nonmonetary settlement will provide free monitoring to the estimated 915,000 affected consumers but will not compensate individuals for expenses related to fraudulent Intuit TurboTax return filings.
Intuit has also adopted “numerous security measures” to prevent further fraudulent activity, according to the Intuit TurboTax settlement website.
Although the settlement does not provide monetary relief, it allows consumers to pursue compensation for expenses separately.
Class counsel has asked for $2.8 million as compensation for attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses. The settlement also asks for $5,000 awards for each of the six named plaintiffs to reward them for their contributions to the litigation process.
Consumers are not required to file a Claim Form to participate in the settlement, but must enroll for Intuit TurboTax credit monitoring by Jan. 22, 2019.

Why is it when we who were affected by a product drug suffer with injuries and these attorneys don’t want to talk to you unless you lose your life are have a loss of a limb if a product like Metformin are Invokana Invokanamet and you get injured a person should be able to sue
This is absolutely insane!! How is it the Attorneys get compensated 2.8 million yet we the actual ones affected by this just get free credit monitoring!?!? How does this help US for what WE have had to deal with thru no fault of our own?
I had someone file a false return in my name, I don’t know if it was through TurboTax, how do I find out if it was through TurboTax. It happened in 2014 the IRS sent me a letter that I owed on taxes
Add me
The same thing happened to me in the year ,2015
I was affected by this, as a result I am forced to get a special number from the irs to file my taxes every year. The year it happened I did not get a return because someone else got it. At the time I needed my money because I had a lot of bills to pay. Now for the rest of my life I can’t file my taxes unless I get a special number from irs. I should be compensated for this. No one deserves to have their identity stolen and to have to hear they are giving the attorneys 2.8mil is extremely upsetting. Through all the suffering we had to endure we are entitled. People have families to take care of as well as themselves.
I was born in Texas, the state of Texas now has no record of me .
I agree with you all where’s our comprensation for our pain and suffering
I agree this is bs I’ve had my identy stolen back then and they filed taxes in my name and got the money .. I’ve contacted the irs the police and whoever and nothing was done .. I’ve called the credit bureaus and flagged my credit report and called social security .. nothing was done .. and I still Can’t get credit because someone keeps trying to get credit in my name .. credit monitoring is going to cut it … while lawyers get all that money … I received a card in the mail about this and they said not to do anything of I chose To because there suppose to give back money for my loss or credit monitoring.. I’m not signing up for that … it’s bs my credit report is screwed regardless!!!!!
This is bullsh*t! I was affected by this in 2015. I spent MONTHS on the phone with the IRS and TWICE had to send copies of returns by registered mail. Almost 8 months to get my refund. So nothing but an offer for credit monitoring while attorneys get 2.8 million? We should start class actions to sue the attorneys for THIS lousy settlement that only benefits THEM!
Exactly the same here I agree !!!!
ME TOO GET THESE GUYS
