Groupon class action settlement

Groupon has agreed to pay $8.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the online commerce company violated federal and state laws by failing to disclose that vouchers contained expiration dates and various restrictions.

The Groupon class action lawsuit further claimed that the company failed to make required disclosures about the terms of use or terms of sale regarding vouchers on Groupon’s website.

The $8.5 million Groupon settlement will reimburse Class Members for unused vouchers through online credits to the e-marketplace.

A 2012 Groupon proposed settlement agreement has been terminated. However, individuals who submitted Claim Forms under the last voucher settlement will automatically be resubmitted for this one unless they want to withdraw, which must happen before Jan. 9, 2016.

Several businesses filed lawsuits against Groupon which were centralized in the Southern District of California, except one potential Groupon class action lawsuit that remains pending in Illinois.

Groupon continues to deny the allegations yet agreed to the terms of the voucher class action settlement in order to avoid the cost of further litigation.

  4. Brad says:

I have 3 Groupon accounts. I have several expired groupons that were not refunded. Groupon closed one of the accounts, and will not allow me to look at expired groupons dated before 2012! WTF?! Has anyone else had this issue?

  5. Betty Samford says:

I went thru the entire process of gathering all the information on the 4 Groupons that have never been used, but paid for and then getting ready to send, I noticed it does not apply to Virginia. Why not?

  6. ann says:

I use Norton Security and don’t get any warnings at the application site. Obviously cant guarantee anything for others, but just sharing that Norton is tough but thinks the site is fine.

  7. fritzbowls@sbcglobal.net says:

I’m also getting a security warning and the link to their website also shows a security warning.

  8. Amy says:

My Web browser is now showing a security alert for the submission website. Is anyone else getting that?

  9. Tiffany Valencia says:

Why do they have to stop the claims December 1, 2011?! What if we have expired, unused groupons AFTER that?!

    1. Carol says:

Groupons issued after 2011 contain a more clearly defined policy: “the amount paid does not ever expire”. This is not for people who simply failed to utilize their Groupons – it’s for people who were led to believe the amount paid as well as they promotional value were “lost” to them as of the Groupon expiration date – which is now clearly defined. The amount paid does not expire, only the promotional value.
