A federal judge has preliminarily approved two class action lawsuit settlements with Building Materials Corp. of America (known as GAF Materials Corp.) involving Timberline roofing shingles.
Those who own a property with GAF Timberline roofing shingles made between 1998 and 2009 may be eligible to receive free replacement shingles or a cash payment from the class action settlements.
If granted final approval, the GAF Timberline shingles settlements will resolve multiple class action lawsuits, consolidated as In re: Building Materials Corp. of America Asphalt Roofing Shingle Products Liability Litigation, that allege the shingles are defective and do not last. The alleged defect may make them prone to premature cracking, splitting or tearing, plaintiffs claim.
GAF Materials Corp. denies the shingles are defective and maintains that its warranty appropriately covers any problems.
However, the company has agreed to resolve the litigation by offering two class action settlements.
The Timberline shingle settlements will cover claims for:
- Cracked Timberline shingles;
- Damage to the roof system (i.e., roof structure and roofing system including, but not limited to, the roof deck, underlayment, leak barriers, starter strips, ridge cap shingles, and attic ventilation); and
- Damage to other building materials (i.e., anything directly connected to Timberline shingles or the Roof System including, but not limited to, flashings, gutters, siding, valley metal, crickets and saddles, plumbing vents, and soffit and fascia)
A final hearing in the Timberline shingles lawsuit settlement took place April 22, 2015.
Mobile Settlement Class Members in the GAF Timberline shingles lawsuit settlement have until April 22, 2022, or the expiration date to file a claim.
The Non-Mobile Settlement Class Members have until have until April 23, 2022, or the expiration date to file file a claim.
Who’s Eligible

Mobile Settlement Class: Any qualified person or business who owns any property located in the United States with GAF Timberline Shingles manufactured at GAF’s plant in Mobile, Alabama, during the period from Jan. 1, 1999 through Dec. 31, 2007. There is a Subclass or group of those Class Members who own property located in South Carolina.
Non-Mobile Settlement Class: Any qualified person or business who owns any property located in the United States with GAF Timberline Shingles manufactured at other GAF plants in the United States during the period from Jan. 1, 1998 through Dec. 31, 2009.
The class action settlement does not include builders, developers, contractors, roofers, and other persons who meet certain criteria. A detailed description of who’s included and who’s not included can be found in the Long Form Notice.

agreed lots of poc marks and tears revealing the fiberglass
roof did not last as advertised not a good idem not even near advertised life need to have replaced
Same exact thing here in Montana.
people please understand if your shingles were defective and your contractor / roofing company didn’t tell you…you really should have hired someone else also I am in NO WAY affiliated with GAF just used there products for years and happy
I used to own the building/house at 308 n. oak st. in Wood Dale, Ill. 60191 and I had the roof replaced a number of years ago but during the time period mentioned in this settlement. I no longer own this house. I do not know what the actual shingles were that were used to reroof this house.
our roof was done in 2005. not only did the shingles crack we had oodles of the grit on the shingles roll out of the gutters during rain storms. I also would like to know how you are supposed to send a cracked shingle? the rotten ones were replaced long before the class action came around.
How are you supposed to show proof of cracking if you’d had to have your roof replaced? I just had to replace part of my roof because it leaked like crazy.
Agree – same predicament! I have photos of the crappy shingles and all the damage to my house, but I HAD to get the roof replaced (and insurance would not pay) and the old shingles were hauled off by the roofer. We were constantly cleaning up roof bits after every rainstorm, too.
Root has been replace.
Move in on 4/1991 notice cracking in 1997
Property was 4/21/1991
