Facebook, now known as Meta Platforms, agreed to pay $90 million to resolve claims alleging unlawful user tracking on non-Facebook websites.
The settlement benefits people who were Facebook users between April 22, 2010, and Sept. 26, 2011, inclusive, and visited non-Facebook websites that displayed the Facebook “Like” button.
Facebook is a social media platform used by billions of people around the world. This class action lawsuit against Facebook alleges that it tracked user activity through “Like” buttons on non-Facebook websites. This button allegedly allowed Facebook to use cookies to identify a user on an external website that used the Facebook “Like” plugin. Plaintiffs contend that even if the user didn’t interact with this plugin, Facebook was able to track his or her activity across the web.
Plaintiffs’ complaint in this lawsuit alleges that “[w]hen Facebook’s session and tracking cookies link the URLs to specific persons, anonymity disappears.” The complaint also asserts that “Facebook can link the web browsing of more than one billion people to their actual identities.”
The consolidated class action argues that users had their privacy rights violated by such conduct, and the complaint includes claims under the Federal Wiretap Act.
Facebook does not admit to wrongdoing and denies that it violated any law but has agreed to pay $90 million to settle the litigation to avoid the costs and risks associated with continuing the case.
Under the terms of this settlement, the $90 million settlement fund will be distributed to settlement class members who submit approved claims. Each authorized claimant will be entitled to receive an equal share of the settlement fund.
Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of authorized settlement class members. The larger the number of authorized settlement class members, the smaller the settlement payments will be, and vice versa.
The settlement also requires Facebook to sequester and delete all cookie data as pled in the complaint that was received or associated with settlement class members between April 22, 2010, and Sept. 26, 2011, inclusive, that may be used to identify a specific user.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 12, 2022.
In order to receive a settlement payment, settlement class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 22, 2022.
The final approval hearing for this settlement is scheduled for Oct. 27, 2022.
Who’s Eligible
Persons who, between April 22, 2010, and Sept. 26, 2011, inclusive, were Facebook users in the United States who visited non-Facebook websites that displayed the Facebook Like button.
Potential Award
Varies.
The payment amount will depend on the number of authorized claimants.
Proof of Purchase
No proof of purchase is necessary, but settlement class members should enter all usernames or URLs for Facebook accounts they used between April 22, 2010 and Sept. 26, 2011, if possible. Entering their usernames will increase the chances of the settlement administrator finding their accounts; if the class members cannot remember their usernames, the administrator will try to find their accounts based on the other information provided on the claim forms.

Ok there is a LOT of confusion here people are confusing payments from the FIRST class action with this one. The $38.00 payments are NOT from this case. This case is STILL in appeals. No checks will be sent out until the appeals process is exhausted.
Thanks for the information
Final Hearing 10/27/2022
Why is there still no word on when payments will be made? I’ve had a couple accounts because of a stalker on my first account. Final hearing was about a month ago and still not heard anything. Why?
I’m still waiting for the payment.
I still haven’t received my payment of $39 from the $90m settlement…
I haven’t received a. Payout yet why?
On November 10, 2022, following a hearing, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California issued an Order Granting Motion for Final Approval of Class Action Settlement; Granting Motion for Attorneys’ Fees, Expenses, and Service Awards; Judgment. Both Motions (for Final Settlement Approval and for Attorneys’ Fees, Expenses and Service Awards) had been extensively briefed and supported with numerous Exhibits. The Objections filed by some class members to those two Motions had also been fully briefed. Despite the Court’s Order granting both Motions, and overruling of the Objections, two Objectors have filed appeals. Settlement payments cannot be distributed to eligible claimants until the appeals are resolved. We do not know how long it will take to resolve the appeals. Please be patient and check back to this site periodically for updates on the status of the appeals.
Not true, no checks sent out for 38.00.
Be careful not to toss the check away, it comes on what appears to be Jink mail, basically just a card
Ron and I got checks for $30.61 today. 3/16/23
That 30.61 was from Facebook 2nd payment from the 397.00 payout.
Not the same settlement. That second distribution of $31 and change is not for this Facebook settlement here. It was for the Illinois Facebook settlement that paid out last year. This is a different settlement entirely and has not paid out yet because it’s received multiple appeals.
Is tru i haven’t received nothing yet but i put to be deposit on PayPal ehy is everyone talking about checks??
Do you know??
When does the appeal go back too court.
I’ve received a email from Facebook and I had to put in verification code and that was in August of 2022
I turned y claim in today. April 15, 2023 because the claim notice on my FB notification appeared. I used my PayPal to send it in. Why did they need my PayPal though?
