Experian and T-Mobile agreed to a $16 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve numerous lawsuits from state attorneys general over a 2015 data breach.

The settlement benefits consumers whose personal information was accessed by unauthorized individuals in a 2015 data breach involving both Experian and T-Mobile.

In September 2015, an unauthorized third party reportedly accessed the records of around 15 million people stored on Experian’s servers. The breach compromised the Social Security numbers and identity numbers of T-Mobile customers, including consumers who applied for service or device financing through the cellular company. Other information compromised in the breach includes names, addresses and birth dates.

Forty state attorneys general took legal action against the companies, arguing the companies’ failure to protect consumer data directly led to the data breach. As a result of this negligence, millions of consumers allegedly face the ongoing risk of fraud and identity theft as their information is in the hands of cybercriminals.

T-Mobile and Experian haven’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $16 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve these allegations surrounding the data breach. Experian will contribute $13.67 million, while T-Mobile will pay $2.5 million.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive free credit-monitoring services. This settlement benefit includes credit report monitoring, automated authentication alerts, Social Security number monitoring, dark web surveillance, up to $1 million in identity theft insurance and at least two free Experian credit reports per year.

Experian and T-Mobile both agreed to strengthen their security measures going forward to avoid similar data breaches.

“These data breaches will keep happening until we force change in corporate behavior,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in a statement. “This settlement ensures that Experian & T-Mobile must do the right thing and fix the security failures that led to a preventable data breach.”

This settlement only resolves allegations stemming from the 2015 data breach. It does not concern another large data breach announced by T-Mobile in August 2021.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a registration form by May 6, 2023.

    There’s been too many breaches by Equifax! I’ve seen 3 so far! I’ve had a freeze on my credit since 2015! And I find creditors constantly making inquiries and everyone can get my credit score but me? And Experian is the same! I’ve got identify theft that has a total breach and everything I have that’s private has been compromised! Equifax, when I called to see why my freeze had been lifted again and they sent me a post card saying my private info was compromised is now telling me I’m not qualified for class action settlement? And wants to charge me $69.95 for credit monitoring? Also, both, Equifax and Experian state they have no inquiries(hard or soft) on my report? TransUnion also! But I’m sitting here now looking at 16 denial letters with every single one of them listed as the reporting credit agencies that denied the application? Also, they have 2 applications from the mortgage co Rocket/Quicken they are denying to receiving, and the mortgage company can now disqualify me to take over my childhood home that my Mom willed me after passing in 2020? Those two applications and the 5 hard inquiries have lowered my credit score by over 100 points! But, the credit all of these agencies that say monitor credit have nothing right reported on my credit report? And I’ve written, turned in the form they require to get all 3 reporting agencies to get my free yearly credit reports and still have not received any credit reports from all of them even after they took my report about identity theft that I have proof all info was compromised this most recent breach of Equifax and Experian? Where’s my $1 million insurance now? I need help! Or I’m going to lose everything, including the losses I’ve already had! Everyone is taking the little money I get from disability Social security income!

    When you say T Mobil, does that include Metro phone company also? They converged the two companies. Not exactly sure what year. I do know all my information is on the dark web.

    I have T-Mobile now. Is there a chance for another data breach. I’ve had T-Mobile for 3 years now.

      JPay took money for me and wasn’t supposed to for fees they sent me a check for $10 which I think I should be getting a lot more. If you know anybody who uses JPay tell him don’t do it. I was told that I can sue JPay if I hire a lawyer.

    Everytime this happens it’s free monitoring BS….I receive phishing emails every single day…phone calls….they tried to hack my Dropbox, etc…..I need monetary compensation not a service I already have.
