If you were strip-searched while being admitted into the Cook County Jail and you previously filed a Claim Form in the 2010 Young v. County of Cook class action settlement, you may be entitled to an additional payment.

In 2010, a settlement was reached in a class action lawsuit involving 300,000 pre-trial detainees who were allegedly strip-searched as they were being admitted into the Cook County Jail between Jan. 30, 2004 and March 30, 2009.

The Cook County Jail strip search class action lawsuit accused the jail of violating the U.S. Constitution by enforcing a blanket strip search policy. The plaintiffs also challenged the jail’s policy of strip-searching men in groups without privacy.

The deadline to file a claim for the Cook County strip search settlement was Jan. 27, 2011. The settlement documents noted that, if Cook County was able to recoup funds from its insurance company, the additional funds would be paid to the claimants. The insurance companies reportedly agreed to a settlement on May 9, 2017.

Payments will be distributed to every Class Member who previously submitted a valid claim in the 2010 settlement.

Class Members who wish to object to the Cook County strip-search settlement must do so no later than Aug. 14, 2017.
