A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging Monster Inc., Best Buy Stores LP, and BestBuy.com LLC falsely advertised Monster HDMI Cables by tricking consumers into thinking they needed a more expensive type of product.

If you bought a Monster HDMI Cable between Aug. 25, 2011 and March 6, 2018, you could get $10 to $35 in cash or store credit from the Best Buy class action settlement.

Lead plaintiffs alleged in their Monster, Best Buy class action lawsuit that consumers were deceived by the product packaging on Monster HDMI Cables and were duped into spending money on a more powerful HDMI cord than necessary for their high-def TVs.

The Monster HDMI Cables at issue in the class action lawsuit include the Advanced High Speed, Ultimate High Speed, and Ultra High Speed.

Monster and Best Buy agreed to settle the HDMI Cables class action lawsuit, although they admit no liability. Under the terms of the settlement, Class Members can receive either store credit or a cash payment. The amount of the settlement award depends on the type of HDMI cord purchased.

Best Buy, Monster customers who are able to submit a proof of purchase along with their Claim Form have no limit to the number of claims they can file for. Those consumers who are unable to provide a receipt will be limited to one claim for store credit.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the settlement is June 18, 2018.

  2. Angie says:

This doesn’t seem like the settlement benefits anybody but Best Buy and both parties lawyers. Send in your deceptive but ups old higher quality product for a small refund and a lesser product. That just sounds stupid to me if you are duped into it.

  3. Bernie M. says:

Wait. What? If the settlement is based on Best Buy getting customers to purchase better hdmi cables “by tricking consumers into thinking they needed a more expensive type of product” than isn’t what the customer bought still “a better product.”
Doesn’t seem right that customers are required to mail in the “better” hdmi cable that the customer now owns. A. what do customers use while they wait weeks or more for a replacement cable; and B. what assurance do claimants have that the replacement cable is better, or at least as good as the one they will have to forfeit to get a 10 to $30 cash settlement? This “doesn’t” seem to be too good to be true but rather, quite the opposite. No thanks.

Wait. If the basis of this settlement is to the effect that Best Buy got customers to purchase better hdmi cables “by tricking consumers into thinking they needed a more expensive type of product” than isn’t what they bought still “a better product.”
Doesn’t seem to be a remedy at all if customers are required to mail in the “better” hdmi cable that the customer paid for and owns. A. what do customers use while they wait weeks or more for a replacement cable; and B. what assurance do claimants have that the replacement cable is better, or at least as good as the one they will have to forfeit to get a 10 to $30 cash settlement? Anyone seeing which option you should choose in order to claim a $30 credit on Monsterproducts.com for each Monster Black PLATINUM HDMI Cable purchased?

    Claim Form Options:
    1) I purchased a Monster Gold HDMI Cable (18.0 Gbps)

    2) I purchased a Monster Platinum HDMI Cable (22.5 Gbps)

    3) I purchased a Monster Black HDMI Cable (27.0 Gbps)

    4) I purchased a different Monster HDMI Cable with an advertised bandwidth exceeding
    10.2 Gbps
