After American Airlines and a Harvard professor preliminarily settled a baggage fee class action lawsuit, Class Members are now eligible to submit claims for a potential refund of wrongfully charged baggage fees.
If you traveled on American Airlines between July 13, 2013 and June 7, 2018 and were charged checked baggage fees that were inconsistent with the company’s baggage fee policy, you could get money from the class action settlement.
On June 22, U.S. District Court Judge William Young preliminarily approved a settlement between American Airlines and Harvard professor Max Bazerman.
Bazerman filed the American Airlines class action lawsuit in December 2016, alleging that American Airlines unfairly charged checked baggage fees after promising free checked bags in confirmation emails and member contracts.
“AA drafted each contract that it enters into with each of its passengers. The contracts include AA’s promises to provide air travel for a price, and to provide other benefits, such as transporting a certain number of the passenger’s checked bags for no additional charge,” the American Airlines class action lawsuit claimed. “However, AA failed to honor its checked bag promises in the standardized software system that AA uses to determine whether passengers must pay for checked bags when they check in at the Airport.”
Each Class Member will be eligible to claim between $18.75 and $200 plus interest for each checked bag they wrongfully paid for.
Class Members have until Oct. 19, 2018 to file a Claim Form. Those Class Members who want to object or opt out of the settlement terms must do so by Dec. 3, 2018.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members include consumers who traveled on American Airlines between July 13, 2013 and June 7, 2018 and were charged unfair checked baggage fees inconsistent with their flight confirmation email or American Airlines baggage fee policies.
Potential Award
Class Members who submit a valid claim may receive a refund between $18.75 and $200 plus interest for each of their mischarged checked baggage fees. A 100% refund is available for checked baggage fees inconsistent with American Airline policies and a 75% refund is available for checked baggage fees inconsistent with confirmation emails.

They’re still doing this… I have the credit card and still get charged when I’m supposed to have a free checked bag. Ridiculous.
Typical class action suit: Traveler receive $19, the Lawyers millions.
Why do we think this is a good idea?
Please sign me up ! thank u
American has a scam which involves traveling from the US to the Dominican Republic. Even though it is an international destination they charge $25 for luggage both ways (a total of $50). And when leaving the DR you are charged $27.50 (an extra airport tax) BUT if you try to pay in cash (to avoid the 3% foreign fee on credit cards) they will not accept change and demand $28.00, giving you a receipt for $27.50 and pocketing the extra 50 cents. This adds up to thousands of dollars. I tried protesting but AA told me they have no control over what happens in the DR. This is of course total bullshit.
I flew AA 6/17 to and from Louisiana. Not sure if I’m classified as a class member but i had to pay for my baggage.
Add me please I paid fee’s when I travel to St Louis. there and back I had to pay .
