Cablevision has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit stemming over allegations that the cable television provider violated state and federal law by requiring subscribers to rent a set-top box in order to receive services.
According to the class action lawsuit, Cablevision has a monopoly on the market and as a result, charges higher prices to cable customers.
The plaintiffs claim that Cablevision subscribers are not allowed to use set-top boxes from any other cable company.
Cablevision denies all accusations but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to prevent the cost of further litigation.
Class Members who wish to object or be excluded from the terms of the Cablevision settlement must do so by Aug. 24, 2016.
Who’s Eligible
Cablevision settlement Class Members include all New Jersey, Connecticut and New York residents who subscribed to Cablevision’s video services and paid a monthly fee to lease a set-top box at any time between Apr. 30, 2004 to Mar. 9, 2016.
Potential Award
$20 – $140
The Cablevision class action settlement offers Class Members between $50 to $140 in credits for services; a one-time bill credit ranging between $20 to $40; or a one-time cash payment between $20 to $40.
Proof of Purchase
N/A
While proof of purchase is not required, Class Members wishing to receive benefit from this class action settlement must submit a valid Claim Form no later than Sept. 23, 2016. Current Cablevison customers will receive a FREE four month subscription to the SundanceNow service without submitting a Claim Form.

Has anyone received notification as to when the extra channels and on demand selections are to be added to current customer accounts when selected as an option?
I received a letter stating that my claim could not be processed because I am a former customer (between 1997 and 2010) who was unable to provide an account number from that long ago, but well within the claims period. I tried contacting Cablevision several times and was told that they do not keep records back that far. So how exactly are former customers supposed to file their claims? The claims administrator (EPIC) said there was nothing they could do either. I was told that without the previous account number my claim would be denied. Sounds like a perfect loophole for Cablevision not to pay a lot of former subscribers simply by claiming that they can’t supply the information necessary to file the claims. I mean, who keeps their cable bills for 7-10 years??? Just another settlement in favor of the big corporation.
After posting this comment, I decided to give it one last try. I called Cablevision for the 5th time and got a rep on the line who was extremely helpful and tried every way possible to locate my old account. It turns out that Cablevision REMOVES the customer name from deactivated accounts after a certain time period. So te rep was able to locate the account vie the service address and the dates of service. This was something none of the other reps had even attempted or suggested. I don’t believe that any of the other prior reps even knew about the removal of names from the deactivated accounts. In the end I finally got my old account number and will be sending the form back in to the claims administrator. I cannot believe the difference in the level of service between one rep and the next. Either that, or the previous reps I spoke with just didn’t care enough to be bothered in helping me to locate the info.
