Former University of Southern California football player Reggie Bush has sued the National Collegiate Athletic Association after an NCAA spokesperson told reporters Bush’s records from his time playing football for the University of Southern California would not be reinstated due to his involvement in a “pay for play” scheme at USC.
Bush denies he was paid to play at USC. He said the NCAA is aware he was accused of taking benefits from a sports marketing agency but was not accused of taking money to play at USC.
“Even if the investigation’s findings are taken as true (which they are not), they do not support NCAA’s false statement that Mr. Bush accepted payment in return for agreeing to play football at USC,” the Reggie Bush lawsuit says. “Mr. Bush was never even accused of, much less sanctioned for, such conduct, which never occurred.”
Bush was accused of using hotel room, getting ride, receiving assistance with car repair while at USC, NCAA lawsuit says
Reggie Bush was stripped of his records after he was accused of taking benefits from a family friend, including using a San Diego hotel room to change clothes, a ride to a birthday party and minor assistance with fixing Bush’s used car, according to the lawsuit.
In 2021 alone, the NCAA made over $1.15 billion and the NCAA has been forced to now allow athletes to earn money based upon name, image and likeness rules, according to the NCAA lawsuit.
The NCAA was also recently facing a class action lawsuit claiming it implements so-called academic reforms to discriminate against Black student-athletes and teams from historically Black colleges and universities.
