Amplify Energy oil spill class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Laguna Beach property owners filed a class action lawsuit against Amplify Energy Corporation and its subsidiary, Beta Operating Company LLC.

Amplify Energy and Beta Offshore failed to adequately maintain an oil pipeline that spewed tens of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean off California’s coast last week, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Laguna Beach property owners claim Amplify Energy and its subsidiary Beta Offshore are responsible for an oil spill which caused a 13-mile wide oil slick off the shore of Huntington Beach.
Lead plaintiffs Stephen Samuelian and Kristin Kay Samuelian want to represent a class of beachfront property owners who have a private easement to a beach where oil from the San Pedro Bay Pipeline washed up following the Oct. 2 oil spill.
The property owners claim oil from the spill polluted beaches, damaged their oceanfront properties, and harmed marine animal life.
The Samuelians argue the oil spill could have been prevented entirely had Amplify Energy and Beta Offshore properly maintained the pipeline.
“Regular maintenance of pipelines is a crucial step that owners of pipelines must take in order to avoid exactly the disaster that occurred with the Pipeline,” the class action lawsuit states.
The property owners argue that beachfront property is highly valuable and that homeowners pay good money to have access to clean beaches.
Further, homeowners in the area where the spill occurred are accustomed to being able to go to the beach to participate in activities such as fishing, kayaking, and surfing, the Samuelian’s said.
“Now contamination by Defendants’ oil spill has undermined the health of the environment, and the coastal beachfront real property,” the class action lawsuit states.
Property owners claim Amplify Energy and Beta Offshore are guilty of a number of violations, including public and private nuisance, trespass, and negligence.
Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting an order requiring Amplify Energy and Beta Offshore repair the reputational damage done to the ocean and beachfront property in the affected area, and to take steps to ensure another spill does not occur.
A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Amplify Energy and Beta Offshore this week by a California DJ who says he frequently performs on Huntington Beach and claims the companies are responsible for the oil spill.
