President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19 as the coronavirus’ global death toll continues to rise.
President Trump on Twitter early Friday morning announced he and First Lady Melania Trump had both tested positive, saying they would begin the “quarantine and recovery process” right away.
“We will get through this TOGETHER!” the president tweeted just before 1 a.m. EDT Friday.
The president and first lady will quarantine at the White House, according to an official memo from the president’s physician.
According to USA Today, former White House doctor Ronny Jackson said the president was asymptomatic.
However, the White House said Friday morning Trump was experiencing “mild symptoms,” the Associated Press reported.
President Trump attended a fundraiser Thursday afternoon, not mentioning to the crowd that he had been exposed to coronavirus after traveling with an aide who tested positive for COVID-19.
Worldwide, COVID-19-related deaths have surpassed 1 million, according to the coronavirus tracking project at Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
In the U.S. alone, more than 200,000 people have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
The United States leads the world in total COVID-19 deaths as well as in total number of confirmed cases; the country has the 11th highest percentage of deaths per capita.
According to USA Today, about 40% of people who contract coronavirus never develop symptoms. The remaining 60% develop symptoms ranging from fever, cough and runny nose to body aches, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea, among others.
Trump, 74 and overweight, is in two high-risk groups for developing severe symptoms, being hospitalized, or dying, USA Today reported.
Implications for the Election
It is unknown at this point what effect Trump’s diagnosis will have on the upcoming election 32 days from now.
Because he will need to remain quarantined until he’s not contagious, he may be off the campaign trail, according to a CNN report.
He canceled a rally in Florida that was scheduled for Friday, but the fate of his other rallies, fundraisers and the presidential debates remains to be seen.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and wife Jill have tested negative for COVID-19, according to The Guardian. The opponents remained separated by several feet on the debate stage Tuesday night and did not shake hands.
The next presidential debate is scheduled to take place Oct. 15 in Miami.
Biden sent well wishes to President Trump on Twitter following the announcement that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
“Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery,” Biden tweeted. “We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.”
Vice President Mike Pence tested negative Friday morning, but has been around top aides and the Trumps, calling into question his scheduled vice presidential debate against Sen. Kamala Harris on Wednesday night, according to CNN.
Members of Trump’s Cabinet were being tested for COVID-19 on Friday, the Associated Press reported.
Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s Supreme Court nominee who has been spending time with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, has also tested negative, the White House said.
The White House began testing Trump’s senior aides after previous positive cases near the president, according to the Associated Press. Anyone close to the president or vice president, including reporters, is also tested daily.
CNN suggested the White House may have to make arrangements to ensure continuity of power and secure Pence.
However, Trump’s doctor expressed confidence in the president’s health.
“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any further developments,” the President’s physician, Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley, said in a memo, according to CNN.

I Ordered Zellzu UV Light Sanitizer Wand Rechargeable UV Sterilizer UVC Disinfection Sanitizing Light Travel Home Office from Amazon to help us santitize our home due to the COVID-19 virus. My husband is a cancer patient and I had to stop working to care for him 24/7. One of the reasons I ordered the UV Light sanitizer wand. The ORDER number is # 113-5013699-3921809. It was Delivered Sep 7, 2020 (left on the back deck).
I ordered this at that time because I needed to make sure germs, mold, etc. were not in the home as my husband has no immune system. On October 8, 2020 while cleaning the kitchen and hallway I noticed black mold from cracks on top of the floor/wall trim. I tried and tried to clean it and used the light santizer to sterilize with UVC Disinfection to kill and get rid of the mold. It did not work. I have scoliosis on my spine and had to scrub and clean, scrub and clean over and over until I finally had it cleaned with bleach and special soap for mold. I was in so much pain cleaning over and over in my back from having so much pressure on my spine. All I can tell you is that the santizer I purchased does not work for what I was told it would do.Also using the bleach and other cleaners irritated my ashma to become active again.
