After mounting complaints by donors about unauthorized, automatic charges by the Trump campaign, new reports say that $122 million has been refunded – but only after donors reported the charges to their banks and credit card companies.
A New York Times investigation revealed this week that the campaign to re-elect the now-former president may have steered donors into making reoccurring weekly contributions. Donors were faced with pages of fine print, says the investigation, and had to manually uncheck a box to get out of the reoccurring donations.
In addition, the New York Times reported that a second, hidden box deemed the “money bomb” automatically doubled the donation amount.
Many did not catch these prechecked boxes and were reportedly surprised when the Trump campaign hit their bank accounts with multiple charges. Credit card companies and banks were inundated with complaints and calls for refunds, says The New York Times, resulting in a historic $122 million returned between July 2020 and the present.
The donation scam reportedly helped the former president out just as he was running short on cash during an important juncture in the election; however, Trump donors say that they were hard hit by the unexpected charges.
One Trump donor, a Kansas City man fighting cancer, told The New York Times that he thought he had been the victim of a scam when his one-time $500 contribution multiplied unexpectedly to $3,000. Another donor, a retiree from California, told reporters that his $990 donation blossomed into nearly $8,000 to the Trump campaign.
All political campaigns are subject to certain restrictions when it comes to donations that often result in refunds; however, experts told The New York Times that the sheer volume of refunds to Trump donors is unprecedented.
Though no legal action has been reported yet, Top Class Actions will monitor this story for developments.
