Pause on Johnson & Johnson Shot Lifted, Consumers Hesitant

Regulators lifted the pause on the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine, but some administration sites report a low turnout of consumers willing to get the shot.

On Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an end to the temporary pause put on the administration of the coronavirus vaccination developed by Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen. The pause was recommended by the regulators more than a week ago after a rare, but serious blood clotting issue was reported in recipients of the J&J shot

Regulators lifted the pause after issuing a warning to women under the age of 50 of “the rare but increased risk” of the development of a blood clot called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome.

The temporary pause appears to have taken a toll on consumer confidence in the J&J shot. In a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, more than half of respondents reported concerns about the safety of the Johnson & Johnson option. Indeed, many of those who had not yet been vaccinated said they would not be willing to get the J&J shot, reports The Washington Post

The survey results seem to be playing out on a national level, as some mass vaccination sites reported a substantial number of no-shows for J&J shot appointments.

A vaccination site in Orlando reported that approximately 90 percent of their J&J shot supply went unused on Sunday after the pause was lifted.

“We probably won’t have any events where we’re only offering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine,” one public health official told the Orlando Sentinel. “We’ll offer it with Pfizer or Moderna so that people have a choice. Otherwise, if that’s all you have, I’m concerned they may not get vaccinated at all.”

Indeed, many Washington Post-ABC News poll respondents said that they want to get a vaccination, but trust in the one-dose J&J shot has taken a hit with many expressing a preference for two-dose options, Moderna or Pfizer.

I received the J&J vaccine. I am actually VERY happy with it as is my husband. My daughter had Moderna and my son Pfizer.. my 2 kids got Covid 4 months after vaccinations they both were very sick!! my son was the worst. My husband and I nothing at all and never tested positive to this day. We had zero adverse effects from the shot. I am actually very glad I had J&J. Would get it again

I had the j&j shot administered by clark county nv health dept employee on 5/2021. A few weeks later I had clots and a stroke. I asked all the right questions and was told unless I was a hemophilia it was safe. I explained every medical condition I have. Still said its safe. I have brain damage to my short term memory and still have clots. I have permanent arthritis from it too since day 1. My life is hell and want them to pay for destroying my health.

I received the Johnson and Johnson I have so worry and I’m very disappointed with the talk of blood clots and no news on a booster I wish I didn’t get this one at all I’m worry about my health. I was informed you can’t mix the shots so I guess for myself and other that received J&J we may not be able to get a booster shot, so what are supposed to do.
