Birkenstock Kids Sandals Recall Overview:

  • Who: Birkenstock is recalling thousands of pairs of sandals intended for children aged up to 3 years old.
  • Why: A plastic rivet can detach from the ankle strap of the sandals, posing a choking hazard.
  • Where: The recall affects some sandals sold in the United States and Canada.

More than 15,000 pairs of Birkenstock sandals for children have been recalled due to a choking risk.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall on its website Wednesday.

The recall affects kids’ Mogami sandals sizes 24-28, which are typically made for children aged up to three years old.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

Birkenstock USA said a plastic rivet can detach from the sandal’s ankle strap, posing a choking hazard for young children.

“Consumers should immediately take the recalled sandals away from children and return the sandals to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the recall says. The company says no injuries related to the defect have been reported so far.

The affected sandals were sold at retailers nationwide including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Foot Locker and online at Birkenstock.com and Zappos.com from March 2021 through May 2021.

The sandals come in black, blue, pink and lime and have “BIRKENSTOCK” printed on the sandal’s footbed and buckle.

The brand is recalling 15,200 pairs sold in the United States and about 27 pairs sold in Canada. Concerned consumers can call +1 844-505-4055 for more information.

The recall comes just weeks after two types of Joe Fresh-brand kids and toddler sandals were recalled by the manufacturer in Canada, after receiving reports of a defective seam.

The front strap on Joe Fresh Toddler Boy and Kid Boy Functional Sandals in Khaki Green may detach due to the defect. The loose strap can pose a tripping and choking hazard warns Health Canada’s recall notice.
