New Yaz Lawsuit Alleges Bayer Violated PATRIOT Act
By John Curran
A man suing Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals on behalf of a woman of unknown relation has included complaints about not only Yaz blood clot side effects, but also allegations under the PATRIOT Act regarding the company’s alleged previous activities in Germany in the 1940s and its alleged ongoing relationships with Iranian subsidiaries.
George May alleges in the Yaz lawsuit that the popular birth control pill led to Karen May’s diagnosis of Yasmin deep vein thrombosis side effects. However, he also includes allegations that a Bayer subsidiary’s dealings with Iran, for which the company has allegedly obtained a governmental exemption, have contributed to a purported pattern of the conglomerate’s attempt to harm people throughout the world. In addition, the Yaz lawsuit cites “poisons” due to a tenuous business link between the maker of gases used during the Holocaust and a prior Bayer company.
As such, May is seeking damages on behalf of all “Women, Men, Citizens of the United States of America, (and) the World damaged by all defendant’s before mentioned jointly and severally for damages in the amount of $21 Billion Dollars.” He is also seeking a permanent injunction of the sale of any product from the Yasmin birth control pill family in the United States as well as other allegedly dangerous products sold on behalf of an Iranian Bayer subsidy.
Typical allegations included in Yaz lawsuits focus on Bayer’s lack of testing after the company received U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the oral contraceptives. Others raise concerns about advertising campaigns that maximized benefits but did not allegedly mention the risk of Yaz blood clot side effects. This may be the first Yaz lawsuit to cite alleged violations of the PATRIOT Act. According to the Yaz lawsuit, George May is acting on behalf of Karen May, although the woman’s relationship to him is unclear.
The Yasmin Deep Vein Thrombosis Lawsuit is George May, et al. v. Bayer Corporation, et al., Case No. 3:13-cv-10848, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
