Cefotaxime May Be Linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome

By Jessica Tyner

Cefotaxime stevens johnson syndromeCefotaxime is a commonly-prescribed antibiotic to treat bacterial infections. It’s prescribed to all types of people around the country, from young children to the elderly. Many doctors agree that antibiotics in general are overprescribed — but there’s a bigger risk than just becoming immune to antibiotics and requiring stronger treatment year after year.

According to data, Cefotaxime has been linked to causing Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) in users. Researchers have used information from 2,065 people who took Cefotaxime that was provided to and by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to determine the risk of SJS associated with the drug.

SJS is a very painful and oftentimes deadly allergic reaction to a drug. It’s rare, but some drugs pose a greater risk of developing the condition. It usually begins as a rash and can easily be misdiagnosed as a skin irritant, but it can turn fatal overnight (especially in vulnerable populations like young children). Without a correct diagnosis and treatment in a burn unit, the body burns itself from the inside out and the skin begins blistering and peeling off in layers.

While there is no cure for SJS, burn treatments can be effective until the reaction runs its course and the skin begins to repair and heal itself. However, survivors of SJS might suffer permanent disfigurement and disability. Blindness is one of the most common SJS side effects since the blisters often collect in wet regions.

In the case of Cefotaxime, some users claim that they were never properly warned about the risks. Every drug has a warning label, and Cefotaxime’s includes fever, hypotension, Lyell’s Syndrome, sepsis and erythema multiforme. There was allegedly no mention of Cefotaxime SJS at all — and that’s the foundation of Cefotaxime lawsuits. SJS is so rare that most people haven’t even heard of it unless they know someone who had it. Many doctors have never seen it in person.

As of Oct. 26, 2013, 2,062 people reported Cefotaxime side effects to the FDA and 104 of those people (or 5.04 percent) reported SJS. Of course, these statistics don’t take into consideration the people who may have had SJS from the drug and either don’t know what caused it, haven’t reported it to the FDA, or those who lost their lives to it and their families have not made any formal Cefotaxime complaints. Strangely, the drug seems to play favorites, too. In total, 71.19 percent of Cefotaxime victims were male and 28.81 percent were female. The vast majority of the people were over the age of 60 at 59.48 percent, and the second largest group was aged 10-19 at 19.83 percent.
