Subaru of America Inc. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over accusations that certain car models contain a defect which results in excessive oil consumption.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Subaru will reimburse car owners and lessees who can prove they suffered financially because of the alleged unreasonable amount of oil burning their cars required.
In addition, Subaru will also grant an extended warranty so drivers are covered for eight years, instead of the standard five.
Subaru has not admitted any fault by agreeing to the settlement but did so in order to avoid the cost and risk of further litigation.
Affected vehicles covered in the class action settlement include the following:

- 2011-14 Forester (below VIN *529004)
- 2012-13 Impreza 4-Door (below VIN *033336)
- 2012-13 Impreza 5-Door Wagon (below VIN *886714)
- 2013 Crosstrek (below VIN *856139)
- 2013 Legacy (below VIN *048086)
- 2013 Outback (below VIN *321435)
Manual Transmission
- 2011-15 Forester (below VIN *543624)
- 2012-15 Impreza (below VIN *270253)
- 2013-15 Crosstrek (below VIN *270284)

Who’s Eligible
Class Members include all U.S. residents who purchased or leased one of the specific Subaru vehicles listed above between 2011 and 2015.
Potential Award
Extended 8 year/100,000 Warranty and Oil Reimbursement
The Subaru class action settlement will award Class Members an extended warranty, as well as cash reimbursement for costs related to an oil consumption repair.
Proof of Purchase
N/A
Subaru settlement Class Members will automatically receive the extended warranty without submitting a Claim Form. However, those individuals seeking financial compensation from the alleged oil burning defect are required to fill out and mail a Claim Form by Oct. 1, 2016 and include receipts (or other proof) that show you paid for an oil consumption repair.

Same problem 80k
My 2013 legacy’s engine just seized about a week ago due to this and I am basically screwed. Trying to find out what my options are. I took it to a subaru dealership for a 90,000 mile inspection and some repairs and then 2 months later it is completely dead. I don’t see how this is okay for a company to do.
Loyal Subaru owners for 30 yrs, but now ditto here: our 2011 Forester (original owner, low mileage) started sucking oil at 55k miles, and the engine just went south a few days ago. No warning lights ever, and we were diligent about routine maintenance, oil, etc. There were NEVER any advisories from Subaru, and now no helpful options from the official (and only) Subaru dealership in Hawaii either. What an embarrassment, this should have been a recall, esp. as this appears to be a small part lacking QC causing major and/or catastrophic damage. This kind of settlement swept it under the rug, and shafted owners with issues and damages post-2016. Subaru should be ASHAMED, expected this from some other company.
We have a 2013 outback, our first, and last. Between the oil burning and CVT stalling shuttering Subbs are garbage. Did the oil test back in Indiana and ‘passed’, but wasn’t smart enough to think that the dealer might have overfilled to avoid having to payout for repairs. I never checked what the level was because I thought they were on my side. You’d think you could trust a service tech, but no. Sad to say this but I have really lost their respect and trust. Time to move onto another brand. Never got anything from the 1st Class Action. Hope there is a second! I don’t understand why there are not recalls, maybe it is not enough of a safety issue. My 24 year old daughter – single mom – first car ever bought – 2012 forester only 85K miles on it – she was so proud of herself. – bought July 29, 2020. She’s only heard good things about Subaru – bought it from a “reputable” big name dealership. Took it on a trip and died 30 miles from town October 11, 2020. 75 days – 2 payments into an $11,000 loan – and the engine is toast. $400 just to tow the car home – and God only know about a new engine- absolutely no oil in the pan. The dealership so far is saying sorry for your luck. And now tells us about this being a know problem with the Oil. There was no warning – car didn’t display overheating or needing an oil change. WHO WOULD think after less than 3 months you would need an oil change. This is so wrong on so many levels.
I have a 2014 crosstrek and it’s doing the same thing, I have 2k to go before I’m out. There should be another class action suit.
Are the 2014 Subaru Wrx apart of this lawsuit?
I’m have the same issues. I have had 3 oil consumption tests done with the first one done before the warranty expired. Now that it hit over 100k miles. I was told just to change the oil every 3k mile instead of the owner’s manual recommendation of 7500 mile interval. The calculated that the car burns 1 quart for every 5000 miles.
I have a 2011 forester. The car started burning oil at 122,000 miles. Subaru will not cover anything. What are my options
2014 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT engine blew at 109,000 miles. Just beyond the class action suits extended warranty. Was quoted $19,000 for a new engine and install by dealer. That’s $7,000 more than the car was worth. This was our third Forester in the last 15 years. Last one we’ll ever buy. I’d say if you have one of these cars and are approaching similar miles to find something else quick.
