Toyota has recalled more than 43,000 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid vehicles due to concerns the tow hitch cover can separate from the vehicle while driving, posing a safety risk.
The Toyota recall was published to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Aug. 26.ย
It applies to 43,395 model year 2023-2024 Toyota Sequoia Hybrid vehicles equipped with a tow hitch cover manufactured between Aug. 23, 2022, and July 23, 2024.ย
The recalled vehicles are equipped with a resin tow hitch cover held in place by molded clips to the rear bumper, the recall says. Due to the design of the attachment structure between the tow hitch cover and bumper, the cover might not stay on, Toyota says.ย
โThus, the hitch cover may separate from the vehicle while driving, and be perceived as a road hazard, potentially increasing the risk of a crash,โ the automaker writes in the recall.
Toyota recall: Repair to be provided free of charge
Toyota said that all known owners of the recalled vehicles will be contacted to return them to a Toyota dealer.ย ย
The dealers will replace the tow hitch cover with an updated part and modify the rear bumper to accept the new part. All involved vehicle owners for the recall will be given a repair at no cost, under Toyotaโs warranty, the automaker said.
Notifications to owners of the affected vehicles will be sent out by Oct. 19, 2024, the recall says.
Meanwhile, last month, Toyota confirmed that sensitive customer and employee data was exposed following a data breach from a third-party vendor, with the stolen information appearing on an underground forum.ย
